I've always gotten good advice here so here I am again, Folks, I have a '00 explorer and would like to know if I can swap the 4.0 ohv with something older and simpler to work on, the truck has over 180,000 miles on it so I know the tranny wont last long either so I'll have to change out both, I see ads all the time about long blocks selling for about $500.00 (pre '85s) I really just want to be done with this thing and have it roll and carry a load without leaving my wife stranded, she works a mail route.
I have thought about going to a junk yard and buying motor and tranny cores and finding rebuilts to replace with, what do you guys think?

No matter what motor you put in it it will have to maintain the 2000 model specs for emissions and regs to pass inspection.

I would save my time and money and purchase a different vehicle, new or used. 180K isnt realy that many miles for a modern vehicle they last alot better than the carburated engines of yesteryear. Im not sure what issues you are having with the explorer but the answer to most reliability issues is routine maintenance, keep up with it and the car will keep up with you.

As stated abouve, I think the motor/trans swap is maybe not the best idea, and you will not only run into mechanical issues, but legal ones as well.

Also I think you will come to find that that little 4.0 six cylinder probably runs stronger than the average early 80's and lates 70's v-8's.

Not advisable because of the electronics. Best to stay in the year range of your vehicle and OBD II PCM. Not sure what year it was that the explorer went from OBD I to OBD II but your 00 is an OBD II.

If you put an older model carbed engine in and try to sell down the road, you might as well just park it on the side of the road somewhere.
