Hey guys,

I have done a little bit of fly fishing before, but don't know much about the equipment. I am going to Broken Bow in October to hopefully catch some trout on fly and am looking for a good beginner to intermediate rod/reel. Any suggestions?

Academy in Lewisville had some Okuma 5wt with the reel, 9ft graphite rod, this is what I am starting with, they are I think half price now, 34 bucks, I got them when they were on sale and paid 17 for mine might check em out. They were not with the fly stuff they were with the loose rods back by the reel counter.

Well, I mostly just want to make a good investment. Nothing that is going to break and something that will make learning easier so I am willing to spend a decent amount. 100-200 bucks probably.

The TFO Series One are all 2 piece rods. If you ever expect to travel on an airplane to a fishing spot, I'd strongly consider a 4 piece rod. With that said, all TFO rods have a bullet proof, no fault, unlimited warranty and they stand behind it. The Academy rod will probably have a one year warranty. Most of the Cabela's entry level rods also have a one year warranty. I can't tell you how many times customers return to the store with a broken rod tip or line guide and no warranty...if you are making a true investment, consider the warranty as well as how much you like the rod. We have the TFO Pro Series (4 piece) rods, a good reel, SA GPX line and backing ON SALE now for $159.99. That is a steal...the regular price on the rod is $149.99. banana BTW - TFO NEVER GOES ON SALE...until now.

Off Sales Soap Box.

all of these reputable companies make kits with rod, reel, line & everything you need to get started and all around 200 bucks
for Broken Bow Troots your gonna want something around a 4 or 5 weight I believe.

Look at the Cabela's Three Forks/Prestige Plus combo. The rods are nice, the reels are nice, however, I might suggest getting a different spool of line. You can do that for under 150 bucks. Nothing wrong with them.

The TFO deal David is talking about is a great deal. The Pro series is a stiffer blank so it will catch trout at BB but will also come home and catch the green trout as well. A great deal in my opinion. I have 3 TFO rods now and love them all.

David nailed it- that deal's hard to beat. Most of the TFO just add water kits run $180 and up.
For $160.00 with that rod reel and line-I'd jump on it!

I found the deal David was talking about:
http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/...&hasJS=true

It's the Prestige Plus reel which is a pretty decent little line holder. I've never gotten to test the drag on the one I've got on a fish, but it feels pretty smooth.

I will vouch for the St. Croix combo. It was the rod & reel that I taught myself how to fly fish with. I still have it and use it periodically. Nice little investment.

I do not know a single fly fisherman, that is really" hooked" on the sport ,that has only one rod so any rod you really like get it because chances are you will by more. Looking for a good investment, buy land not a fly rod. I like the personal touch of a custom built graphite rod, and don't over look Bamboo. When Moses quoted God to say he gave us Herbs(grass) of the fields, I took that to mean Bamboo for fly rods, no? When I'm casting my Bamboo rod on some remote Colorado stream I feel a bit saintly... but I don't think the fish are all that impressed at what kind of rods we use.

For those that called and didn't JUMP on the Sale, Corporate pulled the plug on the TFO deal quickly...maybe because I sold so many so quickly? Anyway, when we put something THAT good on sale, you have move quickly. I was told several people called the Store asking about the Sale earlier this week, only to be disappointed that the Combo had returned to it's regular price of $199.95. BUMMER. realmad

That's not a rod we carry in the store, so I can't comment too much on it. We do have the Redington Crosswater Combo in the store. You can request In Store Pickup and not have a shipping cost if you order online....but you live in West, so it's probably cheaper to ship to you instead of driving to Ft. Worth, unless you just want to come in a talk a while... laugh

I've been fishing a Red Fly 2 4pc 4wt 7.5' for a couple of years now and I really like it. It is only one of three inexpensive rods I own, so I can't compare it to something expensive, but I think it can't be beat for the price. I've had the tip section replaced twice and the whole rod replaced once, good warranty service but I'm starting to think it may be a somewhat fragile rod.

I have some real nice custom built rods, graphite and bamboo, and I got my youngest daughter a cabela's three forks, 3 section, 4 wt and 7 1/2 foot. Do not tell my Basalt fly fishing buddies but I use the 49 dollar cabela combo most of the time. Blue Gills, Bass, Catfish and even a few crappie are not a problem.( I let my daughter use my Sage custom rod.) When I go to Colorado I stash the forks and use only Bamboo until everyone else goes home, then out comes the kid's rod. I am so shallow but I was born that way..... lol.
