How yall doin im Orlando. I went fishin at Calaveras lake yesterday with a couple of buddies, and spent about 4 hours on the peer and on the shore line near the peer. We only caught a few panfish. We noticed a very large number of big fish were surfacing to feed near the peer around 5:30. We used night crawlers, cheese bait, and whatever insects we could catch near the shore. I need advice, i know the oxygen level of the lake is pretty depleted right now but these fish are still feeding and theres still plenty of them. I just know it's gotta be somethin that were doin wrong, i was thinkin that maybe we were just usin the wrong bait. Can anybody give me some tips on how to fish the peer at Calaveras? Thank You

Calaveras has a good population of redfish; perhaps thats what you saw? Try throwing spoons, shadtails, or rattletraps to them.

Also, read through this: http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...ras_lake#UNREAD

99% what you saw were placostamus (sucker fish) breaching. You don't want to catch them anyways. If you're bank fishing move down towards the Dam or Spyder island. Use a thrownet & catch some shad or tilapia & fish them on a carolina rig about 100 yards out. Might get lucky & hook you a redfish or two. For cats fish near the reeds. Waters mighty hot rightnow & the bank fishing is a sit & wait game.

How do you guys get your baits 100yds out? I have seen folks wading but I still don't see how those bank fisherman do it.

Orlando, from what I here fishing has been tough. Give it another month and things will change.

I've never tried them, but I heard someone else say that the plecos are hard to clean but taste like lobster...

BTW, they are invasive fish, probably dumped there by some soft-hearted but misguided aquarium owner, and any caught should be removed from the lake and disposed of properly. According to TPWD.

The Placostamus' are thick in Cally right now. I started seeing them 2 Years ago while Bowfishing. They are exploding-- If my Dad was still alive, I'm sure he could find a way to cook them- Since he was raised in the boonies of Louisianna ! LOL
Then again- Rob (Mexicajun) probably has a recipe For them stir LOL

That sipping sound they make when they surface all around you is what is annoying to me, and that you now catch them nearly all the time now, while trying to catch bait with a castnet.

Ferral hogs are still number 1 on my list, but the plecos are moving up fast!

is it true they make you itch if you touch them? I've used gloves to remove them from my cast net and have a sand paper feel
