I had three line breaks yesterday, all three were tied with Palomars, is there something that may be causing this repeated agravating scenario, all broke right at hookset, heavy cover flippin frogs, SNAP. SNAP. SNAP.

Add more spit before you pull it tight, works for braid and mono. Its the only Knot I use, because it stays tight.

It's a simple,strong,knot. But tie,wet,and chinch it slowly. What line and test are you using?

P.S. If you are fishing a frog "in" the cover then you need a stronger line,most use 50-65 braid.

Recently, I worked as a volunteer for Pure Fishing at the National Boy Scout Jamboree. Specifically, I worked the knot testing machine.I had never been around one of these machines before and it was very interesting. Of all the knots tested, the palomar was by far the strongest.If tied properly, the line would always break before the knot. This was even when the line was breaking much higher than the stated line test. As previously stated, it is important to cinch it down slowly with good lubrication.

Right. Good post. Why do we Americans always think complex is better. No better/easier knot to tie. I tie it slow,wet,and right. Never broken anything off. JMO.

the palomar should be the only knot ever invented

With Seaguar, slobber on it if you have too....I use 10-15 pound Seaguar for almost everything...with a wet palomar, zero issues.

For max strength, you should make sure the line does not
cross itself on the eye of the hook or lure. The line
sould lie beside itself, not overlap.. Many people
do not pay attention as they draw the knot tight.

I wish I could visualize what you mean.

I also experienced knot breakage with the Palomar. I never cinched it down with spit and may have 'crossed' it over. I went with the Palomar after hearing such 'greatness' about it. I'll try spit next time and will observe the line orientation also.

If you are not real careful with a palomar, when you cinch it down, one end will actually move toward where the bend in the hookeye mets the shank. That spot will nick the line every time. When I screw up and do not pay extra attention to that, I just cut it and start over.

Do not twist the line when you go over the hook shank. It will break almost evry time if you do.

Cinch it down slowly. Wouldn't use with flouro.

Probably just doing something wrong. I've never had anything I tied with knot break.

5 years of using the Palomar and 0 breaks with it.

Lube, watch it so the loop doesn't get hung up on the hook loop/split ring of the lure. Also make sure you don't twist the loop as you go to pass the lure through it. Tied it about a million times, you'd have a hard time convincing me to even try something else.

I lost a big fish and my swimbait when my palomar knot broke. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the end of the line but it was curled all up like a pig tail, so I think the line cut it self when the knot was stressed.

I remember cinching it up with the tag end of the line instead of pulling the main and tag at the same time. I think this caused it to cut the line when the pressure was on.

I am using Trilene big game 20#.

I think you got it, pulling one end...basically forcing it through the knot makes heat and wear. I've caught numerous 7+ pounders with it.

When I tie lures once I get the lure through the loop I hold the mainline and tag in my palm and "drop" the lure. Many more times than not I end up with an even knot I just sinch up.
