Good question, and me too! I'd like to see a collection of those successful in Texas warm waters, in particular in rivers like the Llano. noidea

In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

I sell mine. gar rope flies. I get a LOT of orders of them because I think i'm the only one who sells e'm.

a lot of people don't belive in rope flies. Casey Smartt (gartooth on here) has a circle hook longnose gar fly that works great for him.

You see what Dave's doing there? Trailer hook...it works.

Rope, well, yeah it works for long nose, but if you need anything less than a 10 wt, you don't have enough rope. It also helps if the fly looks like a fish, you know, well defined head and eyes.

My rope flies catch spotted gar mostly. I put hooks in most of mine and throw a very stiff 8wt

Having caught a few gar on striper flies a number of years ago on Texoma, I got the hots to tie a few rope gar flies - never tried them out.

If you would like to try them, PM your mail address and they are yours.

N.E. Texas 2 acre and 1/4 acre ponds.

Badfish - You gonna swear to have gloves and scissors and hemostats and needle nose pliers and a net so's to release that fish without a bunch of nasty nylon tangled in its teeth. No excuses if you choose to throw frayed synthetic rope as a sport .....

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Oh yeah I know about having to completely remove the frayed rope before releasing the fish. I was wondering more about flies along the lines of Casey's. I dropped him an email and asked a few questions.

Now I did find a couple of interesting fish holding devices from GASS (Gar Anglers Sportsman Society) that might be worth making before a trip. One involved about three feet of 6" pvc pipe and a couple pieces of pool noodles zip tied to it for flotation. You cut a slot down the length of the pvc and guide the fish in until it's nose sticks out the front then lift it on board and remove the nylon. The other was a board with multiple slots and a mouth bit to incapacitate the fish while removing the rope from his snout. Either looks like a good idea on a boat.

Gloves are an absolute must on these guys with the teeth they have and as tough as their scales are, also the slime on them jacks with any cuts you've got if it makes contact.

So on rope flies you are looking at about 7" minimum to be effective correct?

George what size hooks are those?

3/0 EC413's - 7 inch flies - don't know whether effective or not - big spawners moved out on me before I tied up the flies the following week.

Caught one over 6ft on conventional gear the week before and wanted to catch one on my 9 wt but fish moved - I had forgotten about the flies until read on the forum.
