From BassFan's Dock Talk this evening:

U.S. Open: Pirch wins, cheater busted? 7/21/2010

Rick Clunn made a good run at it, but Cliff Pirch has emerged as the unofficial winner of the 2010 WON Bass U.S. Open. If the standings hold up when made official, Pirch will be crowned a two-time U.S. Open champ at tonight's awards banquet (when the official standings are announced).

Clunn unofficially finished 3rd, with Dick Watson in the runner-up position.

Also of note was a report by WON Bass on its tournament-coverage blog that the league had busted a "cheater" at the event. It's not known if the person in question is a co or pro. WON Bass features a shared-weight format, which would seemingly provide equal motive for a co or pro to cheat.

Allegedly, WON Bass found lead weights stuffed into fish 2 days in a row.

More on all the happenings coming soon.

From the WON blog. Sounds like he did it 2 days in a row!

We just busted a cheater. A Southern California angler was caught with lead weights in the bellies of his fish. They were found the second day during cleaning of the dead fish (they are all donated to charity) and he had the gall to try it again today.

3oz lead weights with hooks so the fish wouldn't puke them out. Bad idea...

Why don't the TDs buy a cheap Wal Mart metal detector for $50 and scan the fish? There are always going to be cheaters where money is involved.

I'm glad these cheaters are being caught red handed!! It's bad for our sport and I hope it makes potential cheaters think once more before trying to cheat!

your goood man. haha. i do agree that the whole concept of cheating is a level of its own out of any unsportsmanlike or grey area act in tournament fishing. just gives a real bad name for the sport. we got groups like peta tryin to bring us down, its only killing ourselves when people who say they love this so much just run it in the ground with these kind of incidents.

Jay,

We do not need PETA to bring this sport down. Some of the Anglers are doing it themselves.

With all this cheating going on. I think the trails should hold the money. Do the polygraphs the day after the tournament has completed and mail the checks to the winners. I think there is a big flaw in the way the system is/has been operating. People are now being exposed that have probably been cheating/stealing and lying for a long time.

I know keeping the money and doing the poly's later would not settle well. I believe, the polygraphs could be administered better than the day of the tournament. Anglers, are amped up on coffee, energy drinks, lack of sleep and the excitement of the possible prize.

Searched this guy and it seems that he may have been a little "bigger" than Robby. He is listed on kramergonefishing.com as the 13th best Cali angler, above guys like Ish, Butch Brown, Mike Long and the likes. It is amazing reading the Cali/arizona forums and seeing Robby's crime mentioned. A good point of animal cruelty charges were brought up. CRAZY!!

I agree my friend. One only has to look at the few tournaments I have fished to see that I have not cheated. Or if I had, I would have to be the worst cheater in the history of the sport-lol.

Are people that hard up or have that big of an ego that they have to cheat? I guess I have never wanted to win that bad and can honestly say never even thought about doing anything that.

What about swallowed hooks,it would be a shame to see a fish have to lose its life because he was digesting a gammy that someone broke off on him.as far as the thread goes...I fish tournaments for the competition and comraderie,go out there and give em he!! For eight hours,go to the weigh in and lay your cards on the table, who was the better man that day, have a laugh with some good folks and shoot the shizzy for a while.there's nothing like it.on the other hand, theres cheaters...who must like money more than friends and dignity I guess.money brings out the worst in some people.sad stuff but hey, even the ones that get away with it have to live with the fact that while everyone is givin em kudos and complimenting their
Ability, they kniw deep inside they don't deserve nothin but a swift kick in the nards.I've been accused of cheating and it sickens me even being thought of like that.but these guys actually did it and are perfectly content basically spitting in the face of every td whos event they took part in, every angler they've ever fished against.bass fishing has no room for cheats or theives.period.sorry for the rant but this kind of garbage makes all of us look bad.

i could never get accused of cheating... since you have to actually catch fish in order to stuff weights in them grin

JMHO

I like this idea. I think the TDs could make one addition to this. Not sure how much it would cost or logistics, but what about keeping the winning teams fish until the next AM or later in the Day. If a fish dies then they could inspect it. Might deter some of this cheating.

I really dont get these people. I guess it boils down to one thing and that's EGO!
Tournament anglers know, you cant win them all. Like anything, you have good days, and bad days. I guess some just get too caught up in wanting to be the best.

People prob cheat all the time and we don't even realize it. I sometimes wonder how many tournamets I hve fished in where the winning fish were in a basket for a couple days.

Sinkey, In my book, The only way to be the best is beat them and beat them on a level playing field.

Was at a tourney just last year and when they called the winners up for the poly they got in their boat and left. Thought they had enough cheating fish to get a good check and not take a poly I guess, then they wound up winning.

I think these guys can fish , it is just greed taking over. Now some of the cheating that has taken place in Big Bass Tournaments are guys that really don't bass fish, just out for a quick check, at least the ones I have knowledge of.I can't imagine ruining your name as well as your family over it.Mike Hart has been fishing out there for years and was considered a very good stick.Wonder if this was his first time?

I find the best way is to use frozen shad. You can keep them on ice, which adds weight, then shove about 3 down the bass like you would a lead weight right before way in. Looks natural, and can give you up to 8 ounces or half a pound more.

Come on - Keep it on topic. The comics here are hilarious, but I prefer to be updated on the guy who cheated.

I want to know the rest of the story. Glad to know they are going to press charges, hopefully he will be incarcerated for a while, but we all know that will not happen.
