if you put it through the gills they will die for sure, close the fishes mouth and just put the stringer through the bottom jaw then out of the mouth

Never hear much about the floating net baskets vs stringers. I've been using a basket for the last few years and the fish always stay alive. I think theres less chance of a shark grabbing your cacth useing the floating basket.

Or float an ice chest in an inner tube to ice them down immediately to keep all blood and scent out of the water around you.

The best way to keep fish alive on a stringer is to place the stringer through the top lip first and then through the bottom lip. This way allows the fish to properly flow water over it's gills, resulting in longer life. The float of the stringer also causes the fish to remain in an upright position on the stringer, resulting in less stress to the fish and longer life.

I go through the top lip then out of the bottom lip. With these high water temps, it's tough to keep 'em alive.

Bottom lip only. There are two places (one on each side of the tongue) where the skin is thin, and the stringer can be poked through easily. Don't go through both the top and bottom, this will restrict or even prevent the fish from opening it's mouth to breath.

Actually, If you only go through the bottom lip, the fish will not be able to close it's mouth completely and correctly flow water over the gills. Without the back pressure of a completely closed mouth, reduced amounts of water are forced over the lamella of the gill filaments where dissolved oxygen in the water is naturally diffused from the water to the bloodstream of the fish (due to a lower O2 concentration in the blood, when compared to the water).

Just get you a Burlap sack and put your fish INSIDE the sack. Then use your stringer to TIE the sack shut and you will have NO PROBLEM what so ever keeping fish alive and fresh. Heck we even take the sack out of the water and move from spot to spot and once to new locoation put sack back in water and fish stay alive.
