Not since I was a kid. Good channel cats as I recall.

Very nice lake and park. If conditions are like they were when I was up there last fall, you'll be amazed at the water clarity.
Until day-before-yesterday at Texoma, that was the only place I had ever caught a smallie, which I did while jigging spoons for white bass off a pontoon boat. There's also walleye and maybe saugeye if I remember correctly, though these are a lot more difficult to come by from what I understand.

You talk about the water clarity of Lake Murray.........Wifey and I took the grandkids there a few years ago. We walked down from the lodge to a fishing pier.

We could see fish swimming down in the water, it looked about maybe 4 or 5 feet deep. I took 15 foot cane pole and poked it into the water to "spook" the fish for the kids benefit.

After all of the length of the pole was immersed towards the fish I was STILL not anywhere near them! A guy on the dock told me that the water was about 20 feet deep there!

They looked close enough to reach in and grab with my hand!

Amazing!

I was out there a few weeks ago and did well throwing crankbaits off main lake points in 10+ ft deep. The point across the damn holds fish, just be careful in your yak, there are crazy wake boats and jet fleas on the weekends. Where do you plan on launching?

I have been told to fish the south east end of the lake. There is a place called three fingers and its three peninsulas on that part of the lake. I have never been there but thats supposed to be a good spot according to another guy that knows the lake well.

I have caught lots of smallies. I caught them on the devils river a few weeks ago and lots of them up in Arkansas last memorial day weekend. I LOVE SMALLIES!

Lake Murray is a great lake. The water is clean and clear and the scenery is very nice. The only problem was that it was HOT! The air temp was 102 and the water was in the high 80's. I went out there with 3 freinds. I let my one friend borrow my spare kayak since he only has a sit inside. And my other friend Nate was paddling his canoe with his wife. We only fished for about an hour or two on Saturday when we got there around 5pm. We were told about 2 months ago there was a large fish kill on the lake and that didnt help out with our confidence at all. But it didnt matter because it was just too hot to fish anyway.

Day 1 (saturday)
My buddy Jake near marrietta Landing. As you can see they have an area marked "fishing" on the buoy. Myself and Jake both caught a bass. Mine was a spotted and it was small.

Day 2 (Sunday)

Put in at Buzzards Roost and mostly just hung out near the cliffs in the shade drinking cold beer. It was just too hot to fish.

Nate and Amanda hanging out under the cliff. This is pretty much what we did the whole time. We couldnt stay out of the hot water for more than a few minutes because it was way too hot. I think I may be done with kayaking until it cools off some.

Good stuff... That really is one of the nicer trips within the "100 miles or so from DFW" range. I understand about the heat, though. It's a bear. Clear water lakes are beautiful to paddle and hang out in, but when the air temps and water get hot, those fish are really hard to find.

Nice pics, Dave. We spent the weekend at a Sarah's softball tourney, and it was HOT. So you had the better deal even if it was more swimming than fishing. Look me up next time you go out.

Im thinking maybe a brazos trip. Hopefully the rivers are cooler than the lakes!

I used to dive Lake Murray often. There are some caves called devils kitchen under that "castle" that are very clear until you enter them and have several very large mud cats get upset about your presence. I never caught much. but I have never had great luck on any clear lake.
