Just courious for now... How far out are the nearest oil rigs off the texas coast? Heard 5-7 miles. Any truth to this? I'm sure there are some that are much further out right?

worked out there off an on for 10 years, only fished days off and morning tower hours though. Most companies dont allow guns, fishing poles, or sporting goods of any kind onsite, so my rod lived in Dallas or Houston most of that time. Where I fell in love with Blacktip.

+1 for http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/forum...=cobia#p1495608 TKG has tons of info under BTB (beyond the breakers) or searching "oil rigs". I'd like to try this summer, but will def try to tag along with these guys that have done it. It's a much bigger pond (much bigger fun). Salsa

Those are platforms, not rigs..........
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Rigs are first to dril down to the reserve. Platforms is the operational center to control bringing the crude to the surface.

The nearest ones around Corpus/Port A start at about 3.5 miles.

Surfside, Texas. Gas platform at Beach access 4 is 1.8 miles out I have caught big kings and much bigger sharks out there. Sometimes cobia will join the party. Also big redfish
Razzorduck Better tighten that drag boy, He's gonna spool ya!

You think a canoe would be as safe or less safe than a yak for getting to that gas platform off Surfside?

sounds awesome! i wont go without a group that is much more experienced than myself. i also understand there are certain tides that are better for paddling out to these platforms. MG11, IMO, a SOT kayak is much better for paddling out to the rigs/platforms.

Canoes are not safe in the gulf unless it is flat calm. Even then they are NOT safe to catch large fish from due to lack of stability. Course some one else may disagree but I would not do it.

You think a canoe would be as safe or less safe than a yak for getting to that gas platform off Surfside? Dude, just saw this... DO NOT GO INTO THE OPEN GULF IN A CANOE! That's a recipe for a disaster. It's feasible in the bay if you really know what you're doing and conditions are right, but I certainly wouldn't.
