I caught a ton of them at Whitney recently using an octopus hook, live bait, and 10-20 pound braid. A lot of the fish I boated didn't even have the hook in their jaw. They tend to roll when they feel pressure from the line. This wraps the line around their nose and tangles them up pretty good.

Here's a pic of one of my better ones out of Whitney. I had a bunch of gear I use for stripers, but I made it "fun" by using my crappie gear. smile When life gives you lemons make lemonade right?

people around here use frayed rope to catch them. apparently they strike at the rope. back home(navasota river) we used wire leaders and perch.
