MFM, What kind of server do you have? The cost of a domain name isn't huge but the nature and availability of the server hosting the web site is key. Whether it be a Unix or Windows based system ... whether it supports PHP, CGI, Java etc ... and what DB types is co-hosts are pretty important. I have to believe that TFF already has these components in place. In fact if one follows the links around TFF it takes us to a web hosting company based in Grapevine that offers exactly these kinds of machines.
As I mentioned before, I'm sure not here to make any money off this personally ... but the flip side is that other than some nominal amount (say up to $100) I'm not keen to fund a server, domain name and be labored with on-going server operations. Ideally this will be a TFF hosted project, hosted on TFF server(s) with design, development and support offered by the community. It may even happen that TFF look at this thread (or have been considering before we started these discussions) and will run with the project on their own (wouldn't slight me in the least).
If you or anyone else ever find yourself needing web application design help, feel free to use me as a sounding board. I can't (and wouldn't) charge for that service. I work for one of those global computer companies that prohibits me doing any conflicting computer work ... but a fishing partner app is fine ... but charging a fee for anything would be trouble :-)

Neil, my suggestion was a simple solution, that could work for a guy who is leaving within the hour, and needs an answer very quickly, but if you have the expertise to build what you are describing that would be outstanding! Pity, you can't sell things outside work. There are literally hundreds of fishing forums in this country!

Whatever happened to this idea? Still being mulled over. I would love to have something like this.

Hi Neil: I had these same ideas, but couldn't figure out monetizing model to make it worth the time investment. But if the community gets involved and pitches in, it may be a better scenario.
I just sent Neil a personal message about developing this idea further. I'm an asp.net/MS-Sql Server developer in my spare time (no php for me), and have a hosting account that we could use. If there are others who are willing to help, we can scope the project out.
Pls send a personal msg to me if you'd like to contribute.

I like the idea. I have often thought about showing up at the ramp ready to go if anyone needed company. Maybe holding a "backseater available" sign.

I think its a great idea. as far as revenue goes, depending on the advertising prices I would be willing to do something for my mechanics here in the D/FW area.
