We did our regular Saturday night fishing a couple nights ago on the bank of Grapevine and caught yet another smallmouth buffalo. We are targeting catfish mostly using the regular baits but we also seine minnows that we throw out on the bottom as well. We seem to always catch one Buffalo in this particular spot but I'm wondering how we can catch more. These fish fight like crazy and are very challenging to bring in on our light tackle.

I've read something about corn flakes or wheaties mixed with big red and a touch of vanilla but can someone give me an actual recipe? Do I just mix it together, heat it up or what?

Thanks for the information guys. Oh, I've also read that the Buffalo is a good eating fish. Anyone have any recipes? I don't think I'll actually keep any. I'm just curious to know if anyone has eaten one...

Well, the Indians used to dress up like wolves and just crawl up to them. Sorry, couldn't resist. laugh

I often catch them on Little Georges while jigging off the bottom for white bass. Not consistent enough to say, "I'm going Buffalo fishing" and have any confidence, though.

You're right on with the wheaties/big red/vanilla/maple etc thinking. Buffalo seem to prefer even sweeter baits than Carp do. And yes Buffalo taste very good, especially grilled. No need to get technical with the recipe, if it smells clean/sweet (not too strong) to you it will be fine. Mix it up at the shore, throw it on a small hook with the tip exposed and wait for a bite. Buffalo will mouth the bait more than Carp, they do a pickup/drop sequence before finally taking the bait. Timing is everything, wait for a pick up, slam the hook home! Good luck.

Grapevine is loaded with Buffalo/Carp, release the big ones to keep the gene pool active. wink

So when you mix these ingredients up, it gets all doughy?

Every Buffalo we have caught has been on a minnow using a 1/0 size hook. What size hook is the best? We have caught them from 9.5lbs to about 30lbs. Every time we catch one though, they are always hooked on the outside of the upper lip with no exceptions...odd

the reason for that strange hook up is that they are nudging you bait with the plate they have just above there upper lip you take it as a bite and strike at it and snag them in this location if you wanted to target them your best luck is going to be with neutral boyant baits they are very VERY light biters and with a nuetrally boynant bait they will suck in on it lightly and it will fly to the back of there mouths the best way to make a dough bait like the one listed float or more boyant is to tie a Hair-Rig and put a small cork ball on the hair and mold your bait around it I have posted a picture of a hair rig on the carp fishing thread you will have much more success when you use this method to target buffalo, other wise it can be quite frustrating!!

Thanks for the input guys. I've already whipped up a batch of dough for these Buffs. Hopefully it works...

Has there ever been any talks about putting a "rough fish" section in the freshwater fishing topics to go along with the bass, crappie, etc...

Next time you catch one cut em up and use em for bait. Your likely to catch some cats then.

They are great cut bait.

dh go to whiterock lake in the day time and you will see some oldtime regulars catching some monsters . i treid just sitting and watching but still didnt learn . takes akot of experience thats for sure .one guy uses two dough balls because 10 times out of 10 they will have too be snagged with the second hook .one fellow was wearing them out one day and he said its been years since hooking thenm in the mouth. get some cotton seed mill some flour and a can of sweetcorn mix it up with the water in the can and try that recipe . lay rod as level to ground as possible and put a small dough ball on line to see the pick up better . good angling , jesse

Marshmallows are great buffalo baits, if you can keep from eating them all.
