Caught this Saturday at Cedar Creek? Is it a grinnell or bowfin?

Nice bowfin.

I always say that when people are fishing for fish they're not going to eat (i.e, Largemouth Bass) and they catch a fish that swallowed their lure, and gives them a great fight, they should still be pleased.

I also always say that if they are fishing a tournament, they may want to cuss bowfins to no end.

Nice catch anyway, how did you fare in the tourney?

I had 1 keeper in the tourny, about 15.5". ad two nice ones hooked up but lost them both, other then that I caught 3 sandies, 1 cat, the bowfin and another fish I have no idea what it was. It was shaped like a sandie but it was blue. Maybe a large shad, it was about 1 lb or so.

Grinnel, bowfin, choupique! That fish goes by many names, some of which can't be printed here. One of the best fighting fish around and they absolutely deserve your respect.

The "best" name for a bowfin I know is lawyerfish.

Funny...I caught one about the same size at Cypress Springs Saturday evening. Never caught one before. Only knew what it was because I had seen someone post here about catching one before. Was draggin a shakey head worm on a small slider head at the time. Was a good fight on light tackle.

Good fighters, great fun. They will however rip up a lure. Bent hooks and ruined skirts are common.

Caught one that was around 10lbs in Florida I thought I had hooked the world record until I saw him... I was disappointed. But still a very fun fight.
