Probably not much. Cold fronts seem to be the big factor.

And fishing is better before the fronts, not after, correct?

Don't forget to watch the cows!
Standing is good, facing south.
If they are laying down, go back home.

Wind direction, how much fuzz on the chickens neck,
tea leaves and lots of other scientifically proven facts.

The wind direction is important too. East the bite is the least West is the best. I have also noticed the fishing is good when I'm at work like today. bang

Funny you should mention that.... Direct quote taken from crappiegal's link:

I'm 68 years old and fish every chance I get. My daddy always told me to watch the cows. If they are up and eating, go fishing. If they are down resting, you might as well stay home. So far this has worked pretty well. –Edna James

good times...

Moon phases,,, not much if any, the earlier the spring run the shallower you want to look during the night. A good place to seek crappie during spring is a decaying cedar grove with lotsa gravel in to near shore. As the season gets on look deeper but with the same types of coverage. Night fishing for crappis can be greatly enhansed by use of lights that will draw in shad or shinners, but agin cedars are the perferred cover at any depth for whites or blacks.

I need to get back into fishing but I know no places around Austin to go. I love to bank fish, or from a boat. I am retired Coast Guard and have experience around water, LOL to say the least! I love to fish for crappie bass cats and most anything that swims.

eYcor, I don't think that was my link quote..could you double check that? I thought you were saying I'm 68, LOL.

I do watch the cows, tried and tested the "if they're grazing, fish r biting", but never heard the facing south or what the heck about a chicken's neck! Tea leaves? Do u smoke them or what?

My Grandfather who practically raised me around Enos point always watched the moon and barometric pressure, but I guess I didn't pay much attention. I was always irritated at him for waking me up at 5am to go bait the lines & sein the shad.

Thanks for the input, I'm paying attention now...and fishing at 5am, the only time I don't get irritated at the alarm clock.

Lots of "Rules" but most are just old wives tales with no real basis in fact. Cows usually feed early and late and lay around during the day and Ruminate. The wind direction usually determines which way they feed.

The wind is usually from the west just before a front and from the east after a front. What made the fish bite (or not) the wind direction or the front? In my opinion it's the front, which causes a change in barometric pressure.

Here's my formula to maximize my catch. Go as often as you can and fish as long as you can. Pay attention to details but don't over think the problem. Don't worry about the weather or the cows too much, Just GO.

Ernest is giving the right answer on all of this.
Fronts and pressure do affect them. There are also certain times of the day they turn on and off. During the summer it's an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset.
I call it the Magic Hour. Fish eat in patterns just like us.
They do sometimes have a midnight snack when conditions are right.
thumb
I'm teasing about the rest.
When my brother and I went we would laugh about all the "Signs" but it never stopped us from going.
It did give us good excuses if we bombed.
Just like in golf, I keep plenty of excuses in my back pocket.
stir
No, those wet tea leaves are too hard to keep lit.

Now to save a trip over to the "when to hook when using a bobber".., thanks for the info BM. I'll try to remember when I'm cork fish fishing. Very helpful.

You guys give great advice! Good luck in the tournament. I'm hoping me & my 29 yr-fishing partner can make it, at least for weigh in. His name is Gary...sweetest guy you'll ever meet.
