Yesterday I brought home several sand trout I caught with my daughter. Unfortunately, several family "emergencies" kept me from cleaning them in a timely fashion. I don't feel comfortable feeding my kids fish that haven't been cleaned in over 24 hours, but I don't want to waste them, so I've decided to freeze them for future use in my new crab trap--once the water warms up a few more degrees. Since they aren't game fish, I guess that's OK.

My question is, should I freeze them whole, or cut off the heads, or maybe grind them and freeze them as logs?

Thanks,

Stephen

This will be the first time I've crabbed with anything but a chicken neck and a line.

leave them whole, but surely freeze them. If you grind they will be chum vs bait.

I cant say for sure about sand trout but for most fish, if they have kept iced down and not submerged in water they are more than fine to eat after 24 hours.

Froze them whole, 3 packs of 3. Figure I can throw one pack in the crab trap, use one for cut bait, and the third will be back up for whichever method worked better.

Use them whole in the crab trap. The crabs will cut them up for you.

Yeah. I meant whole for the crab trap and cut for a hook. My daughter is dying to catch some shark.

Superfly - either cut in half or use whole as some have recommended.

You should receive the fish ID pocket guide tomorrow or Friday at the latest.

I threw 3 in a trap and set it down between my boat and the dock at Sea Ranch. The water may be cold still, but hopefully the near-full moon and some stinky sandtrout will work in my favor. I'll let ya know.

Left the trap overnight and until late this afternoon. Water temp was just 66F, so I wasn't sure I'd get anything, but there were a couple of keepers in it when I pulled it up this evening. I threw them back, but I'm encouraged. Another couple of weeks ought to be great.

BTW: where do you get gear tags for crab traps?
