Recently I was introduced to crappie fishing by a friend on her private lake. We have heard (and now read) that Lake Texoma is good for Crappie. Texoma is soooo huge, and we have no idea where, how or with what, to be successfull in persuit of our new hobby. We would like to purchase a boat but, before doing so, we would appreciate any and all advice that we can get about Texoma.
Thank You,
Cropy Duster

Big mineral marina is having a big tournament on Sat, March 27, 8:00 AM-3:00 PM. You might want to drive over for the weighin. There will be a lot of good Crappie fishermen there and you can learn by observing. Most don't mind answering your questiona after the event is over. I fish there a lot and don't mind helping you.
I also have an instructional video that is pretty good. Send me your address and I will send you one.( or get one from me at the tournament) If you like it just send me $18.00, if not return it.

Duster, you are fortunate to have Ernst respond so quickly, he is one of the very best crappie gurus you could find anywhere. Get his video as a start and if possible, hire him for a half day trip. You'll learn more in that half day plus his video than years of trying to teach yourself. As an newbie myself, the one thing I would suggest for starters, if you plan to buy a boat, look at the deep v aluminum boats by Lund or Crestliner and don't look at less than a 17' model. On a big lake like Texoma, you'll really be glad you did. Ernst drives one himself, as do a lot of crappie guides. And I have no interest in Lund or any other manufacturer of any equipment. Good luck and try not to get crappitus! Okie Bob

Welcome to the TFF and the world of crappie fishing. OkieBob is right, you can learn a great deal about Crappie fishing with Ernest. Cliff Spindle, www.spindleguideservice.com is a great guide for crappie on Texoma too and will also teach you a lot about crappie fishing if you book a trip with him. Either way you can't go wrong. Good luck and have fun getting addicted to crappie fishing. CW

I would go out with both and learn from each. What am I talking about I already did and still do and will again!

Texoma is an excellent crappie fishery. The fishing there usually heats up around mid march and continues through mid may with the mid may to June period slowing down due to the post spawn blues. During the spring, you can catch them from 0-12ft. in the coves. In the summer, target main lake brushpiles in 8-15 ft. deep.
Ernest's Crappie101 video is very informative. If you are looking to book a guide on Texoma I would hook up with Paul O'Bier of North Texas Guide Service. He is one of the best crappie fisherman in the metroplex and is currently guiding on Texoma.
Also, you might want to attend the Crappie Anglers of Texas April meeting since Texoma will be the topic that month. I'm sure you will pick up a lot of good pointers at that meeting as well.
