Caught in about 60 feet of water near the SPI jetty on a live shrimp. It looks kinda like a red, and fought like one, but the coloration seems off and it is spotless. I tossed it back and caught another one that was 14 inches a few minutes later.

for some reason whiting caught in SPI taste alot different than the ones caught in galveston. The one's caught in SPI taste alot better/cleaner... In my opinion anyway.

not a lot of people know this but there are two different whitings...there is the really silvery toothless whiting and then there is the darker blotched but still silvery northern kingfish (or channel mullet)that has small teeth like a redfish...which I think is much better eating and much more aggressive....what you caught is a northern kingfish...the two fish look exactly the same in shape but are different in other respects.

Ah the whiting...notorious bait stealers and great bait. Sharks love a big hunk of whiting.

Chunk 'em out live and whole. Big bait=big fish.

Too good to eat to use for bait. That's what mullet are for. Whiting are just one of the various "croakers or Drum" that are all related that you can catch in Texas. All of these fish are closely related; Redfish, Black Drum, Atlantic Croaker, Whiting, Spot Croaker, Spec trout (yup, specs are related too). Not sure about Sand Trout, but I think them too. Almost every good eating fish in the inshore gulf other than flounder and Mackeral are Croakers/Drum of one kind or another.

Fold, this is where you and I part ways in the thought process. I just cannot bring myself to intentionally target whiting for anything other than bait. I'm sure they're good but there's much bigger fish in the ocean that are as good or better. In fact, I regard whiting as pests. Not as pesky as hardheads but not far behind.

I like to put a dozen or so in the livewell then drown them where a big feisty amberjack or grouper is apt to eat 'em.

allow me to be the one to bring you together. grin
put 'em in the bait tank. if you blank for the day, you still got
taco fillins!
see, just gotta be positve!
for the record, I'd keep whiting over reds/trout any day!

I catch them on fly in Florida by sightcasting to schools in the surf...very fun and challenging..some of them can be four or so pounds.
