Alright, I painted a metal ridge vent. After I was finished, it look like [censored].

So, I know I'm the problem, but trying to figure out where I went wrong. I used acrylic paint to go over the factory applied paint. I ran this entire situation by the guys at Sherwin Williams.

I used a Graco Sprayer for the application. Before I sprayed the topcoat, I used the recommened primer. There are a few spots that are discolored and there are several runs. I"m not sure if the sprayer was too strong, or what, maybe i was a little too close (don't think this was the problem). Typically for these types of deals I use my gravity feed sprayer, but I've wanted a larger sprayer for a while. Any help on this would be great.

I'd really like to make this look better. Even if I have to sand it and restart. Thanks in advance.

More than likely your gonna have to sand it down to metal. The coatings on most painted sheet metal these days are Kinar finishes and they dont mess around.

Where are you and what color are you looking for? I may have some leftovers that I can use to break you up some new ridge cap.

To be honest I have never tried it, When he have to do touch up on small nicks we use small bottles of touch up paint that come from the manufacturer after wiping it down WELL with denatured alcohol. I dont know if the touch up paint is a special type or what but we never have problems with it sticking. Maybe grab a piece of scrap and see what works best. The factory paint is tough to UV rays and environmental stuff but I dont see sanding it being any different from anything else. Just remember they usually have 5 to 10 year warranties on the finish. When your sprayin it I would think a bunch of light coats would work better over a quick heavy one. Good luck and let me know how it goes or if theres anything I can help you with.

I was just gonna recommend if you go with the epoxy kits, Powerwash, Then spray full strength muriatic acid and let it sit for 15 minutes, Then wash WELL and let dry for 48 hrs before you start. Ive redone a ton of floors because of crappy prep work. There are a few more options that are way better than the epoxy kits though.

Yup, that post was for my 40x60 building...I was thrown off by the garage part....

we've been delayed because of all the rain....the building was supposed to be done by the end of Feb.....We just got it framed last week and now it's wet again...i think it's killing everyone right now.

I've decided to go with an epoxy from armor garage.....

I used the epoxy from home depot with the ultra professional clear coat and it was awesome....but for this one, we'll have much bigger equipment on it....

yeah....i'm pretty disappointed....i took a ton of time to get that surface ready....taped everything up.....took me two days to get everything ready, 25 minutes to paint, and an hour to clean up.....lol......and the results werent very good...

so, i think, I'm going to hit it with a sander in the morning and see if that wont' help.

LOL, Give it hell man!

just sand the run out (tell it feels smooth) then touch it up If you can try to scrape (not cut) the run out with a razor blade
