Loc: Tx,
fish Everyone that is planning on fishing the Bass Champs Tourn on Amistad this weekend needs to heed the high wind warnings that are forecast to be 25--45 mph on Sat. morning through Sat. night. This one has teeth!!! We don't need anyone to get hurt or worst yet; to lose their life for a few fish. Remember what happened at Falcon with the FLW!! Reschedule????

There is no way I would risk my life in 35+ mph winds on a body of water that big.

45??? Now that's different
But all places I have looked up say's 22-25.
wungerground which is pretty good say's 22-25
I think it is fair to say that it WILL NOT blow 45+
That would be vary rair.
So I hope no one is saying to reschedule for 25mph. Please

If they reschedule us because of 25 mph, they might as well cancel the rest of the season. 35+ would be iffy, but so long as it is out of the north, we could fish our holes. that is, we could motor upwind, and drift down. Several times. Fine with me if the wind blows.... less competitors for me to fish against.

As long as they allow trailering it will be rough but fishable. Box Canyon and Rough Canyon are both well protected in a North Wind. Completely different situation at Falcon with trailering not allowed.

Hope the wind doesn't get up too bad.

I was fishing the Elk river in Alabama when a bad storm hit. We just made it out of the water when the lightning started hitting everywhere. Clouds were black and blue and the wind was starting and stopping with very high gust. However. It was the Wednesday night tourney blast off time and about thirty boats headed out. Most unreal thing you have ever seen.

Yeah,if their not Gonna Allow Trailering,I'd have to pass. It Would be Nice If They would Make a sensible decision,in advance. To long a drive to just get over there and be Misserable.Never Understood the Whole we gotta leave from the same place in single file order deal anyway.Seems more fair for everyone to start and end at the exact same time anyway.Thats what the Polygraph is for....

Yip checked weather.com...They are calling for 32MPH in Del Rio ,which in my Amistad experience means 40...You will have For Sure one Less competitor,,,Just Not That Mad at Them...Be Careful.

I've always heard a good rule of the wind forcast at Amistad, take the 2 numbers and add them together!! 20 - 25 would end up pretty close to 45, but I was taught math in a small school along time ago!!LOL

fish For anyone in doubt about the forcast; go to Accuweather and bring up Del Rio and "click" on weekend. On the window that says Sat. click on "more" at the bottom of the window; then scroll down. Sustained of 27 building through the day with possible gusts of 50. TIME FOR A DECISION DIRECTORS! Diablo could be a bad decision! Trailer or re-schedule!!

I fished several BC tourney's on Amistad when the wind was as bad as forecasted. Chad will most likely allow trailering and you can fish if your smart. Its the people that think putting in at Diablo and running to marker 20 somthing that come back complaining. The difference between the FLW Falcon and BC is that BC will allow trailering and Amistad has muliple ramps to allow people to get where they think they need to go.

As mentioned, you can put in at Box, High Bridge or Rough Canyon and have plenty of water to fish without dealing with the ocean on the main lake.

If you don't want to risk it, that is your decision. Just my $.02, I'm heading to Rayburn until the front runs us off the lake.

I made an early April trip to Amistad with a buddy in Arlington back in 2007. The five days were there had only one day the wind didn't blow from one the direction or another. It never reached 45 mph, but got in the 30s a couple of times. That was a bad place to be with that wind. Fortunately we were able to trailer since it was just a fun fishing trip and managed to fish safe water. I could not imagine launching at a location with the wind blowing directly into it on that lake. I would bet that Jeff and Chad will make a safety call at the ramp, but I doubt they would cancel it altogether, in advance.

That's why I applaude the Bud Lite Tournament Series...You can trailer for every torunament...because they do have polygraph.

It is interesting how hard up people get for a 20k top prize or a 1k top ten. I've got more than that invested in my equipment. We are use to 20-30 on Amistad but you get 30-40+ and you have a different story.

I was pre-fishing last Thursday on Amistad, wind forecast 29 to 39. Put in at Box and by 1PM the winds were 40+ with gusts to 57. Took out at around 4 and it was very dangerous at box with a northwest wind, several boats tore up, ramp is flat and with the waves trying to get on the trailer skag was banging on the ramp with every wave. Could not tie to the dock it looks like a snake going across a hot sandy desert. Be careful at Box.

Dave, I was there as well last Thursday, it was awful just as you explained and those high winds did not stop till 10pm that evening. I know Chad and Jeff are on the road headed to Del Rio now, but be assured they are watching the weather forecasts so they can make their decision. They have our best interests in mine as far as safety is concerned. They both are the best Tournament Directors I have ever worked with over the years. thumb

See you all at Amistad and lets go fishing fish

Don't forget a 25 mph wind will be 30 -35 down in the canyon over the lake. Think of it as a pop bottle blowing into the large end and exiting the small end. BIG DIFFERENCE!

I was on Lake Meade in a tournament when the winds came up to 40 with gusts way over that; my Ranger filled with water with two BIG-ONES over the bow and the biggest problem is you cannot steer and are at the mercy of those big breakers coming in from all directions. The waves were so tall you could not see over them. My partner had never been in a bass boat and had never fished for bass, it was so bad I tied us both to the boat. the wind finally put us up on the bank and that experience did him in. When we got back to weight in, he said nothing just walked away... So I remember being 6 foot talk and bullet proof but you cannot steer if your boat is FULL of H2O. Be careful.

The big blue can get real ugly real quick. I have seen the Black Brush dock completely torn loose by winds and waves. it's a great lake and wonderful fishery. Use common sense but, don't ever treat her (Amistad) like you would other lakes when it comes to high wind.

It Isnt about if you think you can drive in it, Evil Kneivel Thought he could jump 212 Buses, Looked how that worked out. The common Sense thing is to reschedule, May as well take your 300 bucks and drive out on the bridge over the lake and let it go. Yes someone will win, But I doubt it will be because they got there spot and used there Mad Skillz(lol)to beat you.

Last week Wunderground.com had Del Rio Predicted to have 39 MPH winds on Thursday. As of right now the winds on Wund are only predicted to 20 Mph for Saturday. Im sure they will be a lot higher as I always figure a 10 to 15 MPH fudge factor. As for as no one being able to get to their fish thats BS. Many prudent fisherman know that prevailing winds at Amistad are from the North this time of year and scout accordingly. My two cents.

I heard the wind was up close to 60 that day but don't know for sure. What I do know for sure is that was the biggest water I have ever been on and we took our time and I was never concerned. They were rolling and you can work with rollers. For those of you who might remember there was at least 1 and maybe both 60ft houseboats that got swamped died up to Diablo. Be careful, keep your wits about you and know your limitations. It isn't worth the risk.

No reason for all the crying and whining...either fish it or don't show. The Dawg is a lot smarter than he looks smile wink

Also remember Judd it was unlikely you were in a Ranger and that really helps with the confidence factor. haha

Arent you glad you were in a Ranger!!!

Im afraid more than chin straps will pucker in those winds, as for running in that kind of wind on lakes, I havent found the fish yet worth my boat or my life, common sense gentlemen, I know some of you are the "macho men" and will run in any weather, just remember, the fish are always there, we are not. Good luck to all who do go and brave it, I hope everyone comes back safe.

Never knew there were so many experts at operating a bass boat in 40+ mph winds on large lakes. 60ft houseboats are getting swamped, docks are being torn up by the waves but all these folks that can run the lake in 18 to 22 ft bass boats. Guess I can get a list of names to call to give me driving lessons.

NOT LIKELY.

Let's just cut through the chase--- Bottom Line--- This is going to be a very dangerous lake to be on this weekend with wind gusts up to 50 mph and sustained 25+. But as usual there are a few bad boys (wannabees) that think they're invincible and compare theirselves to the ELITE crew. But what they don't have is sponsors to replace everything they're going to tear up in 5 to 7 foot waves! For peanuts!! There's not a ramp on Amistad that provides protection from that!! Who's kidding who! This one's going to be bad! I've never missed a Champs tourn. but this one is keeping me home! Good luck guys!! It's just fishing!!!

Those weather forcasters sometimes speak with forked tongues!! grin

Several times I have anticipated a "snow day" where I would be out of school. This was bolstered by the weather predictors spouting "SNOW!...SNOW!...SNOW!"

I was all set to track rabbits, lay up in the bed with Wifey.....whatever....and NO SNOW!

Ya just can't believe those politicians and weather people! grin bouncy breakdance

All I have to say is Bass Champs runs a great tournament trail and they should make the right call on this one . Just remeber that when you are out there, you are not only putting your life in danger but the life of rescue workers if they have to come and get you.Everyone be safe and use good judgement.
