Can anyone explain the effect it has on fish behavior if any? Not that it will keep me from going if the pressure is "bad" just curious.

Low barometer is supposed to be best.

From what I have heard. If there is any sudden change either way lower or higher of pressure. Fish will be supposedly less active. They want a stable environment to feel comfortable. And when they are more comfortable they are more likely to be active. But all of these barometric pressure theories are just that, theories. Nothing has been scientifically proven.

I heard 30.00 inches and lower is best. 29.79 is optimal and when its dropping is always good.

I have always been told the pressure change makes a fish feel sick for a day or 2 (post front) so they feed up just before, which always made sense to me since they seem to bite before a storm.

Im not sure what the truth is, and not sure about science, but i never have good days when its high pressure.

Here is a link that calculates all of that for you and tells you the perfect time of the day to fish. It seems to always work for me in deciding what time to go out for the day.

High pressure and deep water do not mix well.

I've told several friends about it, and they think it's BS. Two mornings ago I went out to my local pond with a red rattletrap at 8:30, because it told me the peak of the day was right around 9:00am. That was right before the rain came in around 10am. I caught 4 3lb bass in a matter of 30 minutes, and then it was completely dead. The chart showed it dropping off right at about 10:00 and it was right on. I've used it for about a year, and it is about 90% accurate. The times I get skunked is definitely as a result of my sub par fishing technique.

This forecast tool has nothing to do with barometric pressure. It is the solunar activity charts. For those with "Primetimes" calendars, this mirrors the peak periods shown.

Now, combine a favorable pressure trend with a peak activity period... banana

Here is a good rule of thumb:

Pressure Trend

Typical Weather

Fishing Trends

Suggested Tactics

High

Clear skies

Fish slow down, find cover or go to deeper waters.

Slow down lures and use baits more attractive to fish. Fish in cover and in deeper waters.

Rising

Clearing or improving

Fish tend to become slightly more active

Fish with brighter lures and near cover. Also fish at intermediate and deeper depths.

Normal and stable

Fair

Normal fishing

Experiment with your favorite baits and lures.

Falling

Degrading

Most active fishing

Speed up lures. Surface and shallow running lures may work well.

Slightly lower

Usually cloudy

Many fish will head away from cover and seek shallower waters. Some fish will become more aggressive.

Use shallow running lures at a moderate speed.

Low

Rainy and stormy

Fish will tend to become less active the longer this period remains.

As the action subsides, try fishing at deeper depths.
