Will be fishing w/ Capt. Mike Patterson out of Rockport for 1/2 days the 16th and 17th this month. I have an 8 wt rod and reel but this is my first salt water/fly fish experience. Fishing for Reds, what leader/tippet do I need? Any fly suggestions? Are the salt fly's sinking or do I need split shot or what? Any information for a salt newbie is MUCH welcomed!

Thanks a bunch!

Have you had any casting lessons yet? If not I would suggest some before you go.

Learn to double haul if you have not allready. It will help you with distance and the line speed needed to get through the wind. These fish are generally not leader shy so 9 ft is fine. Most of the fish will be in less then a foot of water. no need for shot or sinking lines here.
Think of your flies in terms of sink rates over that skinny water. A clouser to jig off the bottom, a slow sinker like a Seaduecer for mid depth, a popper of some kind for the surface and a spoon fly just in case.

7-9' tapered leader @ 10-15 pound test, flouro if you want, no split shot, is that guy a fly guide? If so he'll have flies, otherwise you need to cover the water column with:

a) popper or gurgler
b) seaducer or kwan
c) clouser or crab

floating fly line. If you're sight fishing from a poled boat practice making very fast casts (not so fast you lose control) to 20-40' in your front yard before you go until you're good at hitting your target.

If you're gonna get out and wade practice casting to 50 feet or so into the wind (double haul).

And remember, it ain't water if it ain't got salt.

the biggest thing about sight fishing is being able to see under the water, once you've learned how to do that you will be fine

Got some Costa Del Mar, 580's in glass lens w/ in Amber. Man those things are KILLER you can see way deep in the water. Was fishing with my grandson who was wearing his Oakley's. I kept telling him about the fish I was seeing and he could not see them. He was asking how I could see when he could not. Made the mistake of letting him look through the Coasta's. Lost them to him for the rest of the day. They rule!

AND figure out which end the mouth is located on. Much easier to make them eat if you put it in FRONT of them... don't ask me how I know. smile

"AND figure out which end the mouth is located on" - I understand from what I read that is why the reds have a spot on their tail. Bigger predators strike at the tail and the fish swims off. Sounds good anyway.
