Not very fisher-friendly due to a combination of reasons-

Very shallow
No place to safely launch boat
No place to safely park without fear of theft
Consumption ban on fish caught due to high PCB levels in the water

Actually, in the late 70's Mountain Creek was one of the "experimental" lakes that TPW stocked Florida Strain Largemouth's. Put in many power plant lakes due to the belief that they would live only in "hot water" lakes. This is the same program that had Lake Monticello kick off the "modern" big bass craze that shattered old state records. Polluted from years of dumping from LTV and the old Navy base. Very shallow. Ran my boat across the lake by the toll road years ago and never saw water over 8' deep. People used to sandbass fish it around dam. Crappie from cattails around shore and catfishing in the hotwater discharge from shore. The one time I put my boat in years ago it was hard to wash the scum ring off it! I would be interested to see if anone catches bass from it anymore.

So nobody actually Bass fish Mountain Creek or just nobody want to admit it? The only lake in Texas I know of where you would run a chance of hitting an old fighter jet left in the upper shallows!

I'd figure after 4 or 5 dozen casts and retrieves the lure would melt off your line if the line didn't disintegrate first.

If you do try it, I hope you have a CHL and carry it with you.

Ive seen reports on here of great bass fishing on Mountain creek, you just need a security guard to watch your vehicle while you fish.

I went a few times on my kayak last year during the spring and early summer. Never had an issue with my vehicle. Parked at the ramp closest to DBU. Got into the whites pretty good a few times and also caught alot of crappie casting rattle traps around the damn and old runway rocks. Only caught a few smallish bass.

I have been told that there is no actual plane in the lake. Supposedly they put a tail fin from an old F-4 Phantom on a pole embedded into the lake bottom to scare the rookie pilots that were training at the old Grand Prarie Naval Air Station. Don't know if this is true or not though but the story of the entire plane sounds a lot more interesting...

I've caught a 6lb bass in the creek across from the cemetary over there. Also used to catch a bunch of sandbass in that spot too. I wouldn't kepp anything from there and make sure to watch your back theres always shady activity going on over there.

There is indeed an aircraft in the south end of the lake.

As far as fishing the lake, it still produces, I grew up fishing it, but the best largemouth I ever caught from it was just over 6 lbs. Nice fish, but no monster. It is, however full of aggressive and strong 3 lbers.

As a kid it was always a great white bass and crappie lake. I've seen 20+ freshwater drum in person, and saw a photo of a 40+ from that lake.

They stocked reds in it in the 70's as well, but I never saw one, or heard of anyone catching one back then. Maybe the whites ate them (hint).

Dallas has been patrolling the Grand Prairie side of the lake (although still Dallas, I guess) a lot more, and the location of the old ramp (just north of the 303 tollway) has been safe for me to park at several times over the past few years when taking a kayak out there.

i have grown up in GP all my life and i still say mt creek lake is the best lake to fish. i still swear on it. if you have a boat go there early spring and fish the rocks by the damn. if your ballzy you can park and tie off at the damn after a good rain but be sneaky and walk over the damn to the spill way. be careful cuz its private property but you can catch 4+lb crappie and 50+lb catfish. i was there about 3 years ago b4 i joined the army and was using a little Cleo spoon after the flood gate was opened up and i caught about 30 crappie and 20 catfish and i lost count of all the sand bass i caught. i had 12lb test and i caught a 67lb Flathead although the catfish had parasites and leaches on its head but it was a good fight. if you fish the rocks by the dam use a pearl 6in culprit worm. i have caught 10 pounders back to back. the north side of the bridge is anywhere from 7-15ft and at the dam its 37ft. on the south side where the plane is its only 2-5ft. if you go up in the channels by the golf course you on the south-side you can catch nice crappie and catfish and sandy s. BE CAREFUL tho!!!
by the run way @ night time you can catch crappie and cats and even alligator gar if you tie off and use goldfish and dead shad. by the dam if you stay west you can see were there is a old boat house you can also go there and catch crappie and bass and cats. I have not caught nor tried to catch buffalo or carp. i have seen 18 lb bass come out of that lake and mounted on walls!!! I am not fibbing nor telling fishing stories. my biggest bass was caught by the golf course which was 13.8 like i said mt creek lake has a lot of potential just be very careful and do not go there in the heats of the summer. the Exxon power plant uses the water to cool the turbine generators and that lake will get to 90+ degrees and its hard to keep your motor cool on the boat and hard to catch fish cuz they're constantly moving or in the deep water by the damn and they aren't hungry. spinner baits and fluke worms work well during the spring @ the runway as well. i still fish the golf course when i get the chance when i come home to visit every once in awhile. i have seen people eat fish out of there and talked to old ladies that say they have eaten the fish out of the golf course and lake for 40 years. the golf course is connected to the lake as well so they are supposedly contaminated too.

My dad worked for DP&L and employees had access below the dam. Back in the day it was nice. There were picnic tables paved parking, etc. barryfish isn't joking about the fish down there, it was some of best fishing behind there.

yeah im aviation for 2ID out of ft carson so i know exactly what your saying. i also know back in the 80's they found a bunch of 50 gallon drums with fuel in it so that didnt help. and about the picnic tables and stuff there still there. i stand on the concrete pillers as the water rushes down the dam. its awesome to throw and bare treble hook in and catch hugeeeeeeeeeeeee sandys or crappie. sometimes its a nusence to catch catfish cuz you arent trying to catch them and they wont stop biting the line. lol i am going home in june so if anyone wants to do some good fishing let me know. i know alot of local stuff around DFW area that have big bass

my friends used to jump the fence once i told them about it but that was back in 2007 i havent been there since late 2007 and i use my boat to park along the dam and tie off to the dam. it sucks cuz when its windy and theres waves your boat smashes against the rocks but its worth the worry cuz you can catch huge fish. speaking of parking my boat there i need to get a powerpack for my boat so when i go home on leave in june i can go there. if i get the part i am always happy to take someone along with me fishing if they want.
