I was looking at the stocking histroy on the TP&W web site, what happen to all the walleye stocked in north central Texas Lakes like Cisco over 4 million, O.H. Ivie over 4 million, Possom Kingdom over 16 million, did all those fish die; I never hear anybody talk about catching any

Water wasn't cold enough in the winter to provide for a good Walleye spawn. Walleye are pretty temperature sensitive and light sensitive. Texas waters, with a few exceptions in the panhandle, just aren't suitable to Eyes... now Saugeye are a different story.

No spawn = no fish.

You don't have to go too far into the land of the Okies to find walleye, though.

I don't think that is true, I believe you have to go WAY North before you get Walleye to naturally spawn. Oklahoma has Walleye and Kansas is actually a really good Walleye/Saugeye state, but they are all milked and released later. I think Kansas has to work really hard to keep the Walleye/Saugeye numbers up. I bet Texas could do it too, but most of their resources go towards lunker bass.

Squaw Creek had walleye in it. You could always catch them along the dam rock rip rap in the spring.

Texoma possibly has a few left in it but most walleye will go thru the dams and into the rivers when they let water out.

Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas are the best bets for walleye. Meredith in the panhandle has them but there are restrictions on eating them because of pollution.

I remember catching quite a few of them back in the day. Lake Waco and Belton both had decent populations. The biggest I caught was from Belton. It weighed just under 3 lbs and I caught it on a Zara Spook of all things.

Well here in NM, the Fish and Game did a test, they pulled spawning walleyes (from Ute) and took eggs, fertilized them and put the fry into Ute I believe, they left Conchas to produce fry naturally. The next year they netted and sampled the walleyes of the right size. They found that both lakes were in the same situation, the stocking of fry did not improve one lake over the other. So now they pull the walleye spawn and they trade the fry for stripers and such and restock Ute, Conchas, Abiquiu and Elephant Butte (Caballo?). Not sure if they are stocking all of those, but Casey the Biologist is willing to talk to anyone about what they are doing or have tried. When I have a question I just call him. Ute and Conchas are @ 4,000' altitude and the water gets cold in the winter. EB is @ 3,000' and Abiquiu is a trout lake. They all have cold winters for the most part. I don't think that is the only variable, EB has been coming on strong lately for walleye. I can't remember walleye stockings there in a long while.

Also:

from the NM Fish and Game:

Every March, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish collects millions of walleye eggs, mostly from Ute and Conchas reservoirs, for artificial propagation at the Rock Lake Hatchery. Up to 40 million walleye eggs are hatched and nurtured, then stocked as fry in area reservoirs. Walleye is a neat fish to catch, for sure.

Meredith, Mackenzie, Palo Duro, Maclellan( Although I believe this lake is currently in bad bad shape, so most likely not), Greenbelt are all Walleye producing waters, there are a few more down by Lubbock and those listed that all have naturally reproducing stock in them. I'm sure there are quite a few more that I'm not aware of also.

Lubbock is just about as far south as you can get Eyes to spawn. Sauger can tolerate slightly warmer waters and Hybrid Saugeye can tolerate warmer waters yet.

Most people don't catch much in the way of Eyes or Sauger/Saugeye in Texas as most everyone here targets, Crappie, Bass and Cats.

Anyone interested in Walleye fishing, feel free to PM me. I currently fish the lakes mentioned for Smallies and Eyes and have grown up fishing for and eating Eyes in Michigan.

I grew up fishing Lakes Huron, Erie, Saint Clair and a few natural inland waters. I also fished the Detroit and Saint Clair river systems to great effect for Eyes.

Walleye are overlooked as eating fish as they taste better than crappie. Yellow Perch can even be found in a few Texas waterways up here in the Panhandle.

Many of those have been stocked in last 10 years, but how productive are they? What kind of catches and sizes do you get? Never thought of Texas having fishable Walleye, but forgot panhandle is almost Kansas.

There is still Walleye in Ivie.
Few and far between; but a catch ever now and then.
Saw 3 come to the cleaning station at Elm-Creek-
2000; with Mike Stuard, "MR.Wiskers" . 3-8lbs.
Caught 2 personally in 2006 same weight.
Had 3 one night come into the boat July-2-09, all
about 5lbs.
Walleye are in Ivie; and reproducing. Numbers are not
up there as Meredith, or other places. They are in
there though!
All my, our; Walleye came from the the Brood-Pond; Area
by the Dam and Observation-Point area, at night, caught
on Shad.

Thanks Bittercreek

Only walleye I have caught were on a canoe trip in the Minnesota boundary waters. Best tasting fresh water fish out there. All the restaurants up north feature walleye on the menu. Also caught a few of these fighters:

Some of the campers out in the boundary waters actually ate pike. Not me, way too many bones.
