Sam Rayburn has continued to rise this week to 164.10. The water is still stained in the mid lake area.
Sam Rayburn broke out of the ice box as we got some much needed sun. That warmed the water up into the mid 50s in some of the pockets and the fish began to get a little more active. Some started to chase a Stanley spinner bait or traps worked over the grass. These fish have just started to move in and will continue as we get closer to the spawn. The senko’s and wacky worms worked around the buck brush caught a few more fish as we eased along. There have been several big fish caught this week that had moved up shallow. Things are looking better for catching some nice fish. The grass is doing great with some of it out to 14 ft. This grass edge is like a highway where the fish move along it. We caught several fish on these edges on Carolina rigged lizards and brush hogs. The trap bite should get better on the points and in the drain and ditches as the fish move in making their way into the spawning grounds. Look for some big fish to stage on the first points and drops on their way in to spawn. There is a lot of water in the buck brush so look for a lot of pitching in there as the males move in and start to set up nests. Things are getting busy around here so make sure you get you trips booked for this spring.
Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and run thru April 30th. If you haven’t heard, it encourages anglers who catch a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this and one of them is that the angler receives a fiberglass replica of the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at 1-888-784-0600 Check out the Program rules at their site along with the Benefits.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tffc/sharelunker/ Crappie; There been a few crappie caught in the grass on the points off the main lake on traps. They are on the move back down the river but it will still be slow for now.
The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get your group booked for a spring crappie trip.
God Bless
