I build custom fly, spinning, and baitcasting rods. I have been building since 1995 and I specialize in rods for inshore saltwater fishing. I specialize in fly rods (mostly 7,8, and 9-weight) and spinning rods as well as baitcasting rods for the wade fisherman. I also do rod repair as well. I am located outside of Austin, TX on Lake Travis.

I build rods out of my house by word of mouth so I don't have a place of business or advertise much. My style of rods are just simple and elegant looking rods built to perfection, but I can build anything a customer wants. Wait time is 10 days from the place of order of the rod to when it is completed. And 2 days to ship.

I also replace guides on a rod if it is a guide or two at no charge except for the cost of the components, so it is a very minimal cost.

I am retired and have some time on my hands and would like to build some rods for my personal use, not to sell. I am not wanting to compete with anyone for rod sales. Can anyone point me in the right direction to learn what I will need to start? I bought a rod from a guy 25 years ago that was the very best topwater rod I have ever used. It was one of the first with a long handle. The bottom part of the handle broke off which made casting with two hands impossible. I would love to build a rod that could replicate what this rod could do. I would appreciate any pm or any help in this matter. Thanks.

Paul D. Hudspeth is a Texan named after his Greek fisherman (Pa Paw) Paul Vellas. He's making custom rods now south of San Antonio. He and I used to fish the Intercoastal Canal south of Port A when we were kids in our dad's boats. Then when older I'd meet him in Rockport at his place there, when I lived in Houston. He had a fine Boston Whaler. His pa paw made some corks out of buoyant wood when we were teens and we and our dads tried to duplicate them since they were magical. We were almost successful. We would use these to "free shrimp" out of our boats. I've gutted a lot of fish with this fisherman. His brand is San Pedro Custom Rods. Here is his email....
