I am very new to drop shotting but have seen great success with this technique. Can somebody tell me what hook is best to use. The ones that I saw in the store looks tiny. I'm just not confident that a hook that small can penetrate a big fish or hold up if you do get a big fish. Also, what is the best setup to use (rod, line, bait, etc.) Any information would be very helpful.

Them small hooks won't fail you don't worry. I only use the gama's the owner hooks are very good to. as far as lb test line. I'm a little on the crazy side and use 4 to 6lb test when fishing open water. If I'm using them close to cover I'd bump it up to 8 to 10lb test. Keep in mine this is my experience fishing the clearer waters in ct. So you might be able to get away with a little heavier line like a 15lb. But aways use 100% fluorocarbon. I use a shimano crucial 7'2" MH fast action tip paired with a stradic 2500 for deeper water and the same rod in the 6'8" and a stradic 2000 in shallower water. Robo worm and berkley gulp alive minnows and leaches are my favorites.
If your in the Dallas area and want to go out on the water to get together and I'll show you what i know about it. Its my favorite way to fish for smallies and lmb. I'm new to the state and looking forward to getting nito the spot's that stack up in deep waters down here just like the smallies do.
oh most forgot..My best color is motoroil.

Those Gamakatsu drop shot hooks in 1/0 are hard to beat and they hold up well. I like them with a small fluke, cast it out there and hang on!

#2 Gammy dropshot hooks for me. light wire, and allows the flesh inside the mouth to be hooked for less missed fish. a few 4# + fish have come to my boat with nothing but flesh hooked inside the mouth...

Gammy all the way. I use these on smallies(up to 5 lbs) and have never had one lost fish do to the hook.
