You might also consider the EP with a small clouser as a dropper. Double hook-up on those rascals is not uncommon. cool

In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

Cat's Whiskers, all gray, size 10, with a short tail

Crazy Charlies in chartreuse or white

Cypert Mylar Minnows, gray or chartreuse

Clousers tied sparse

Naked Ladies (that's a Clouser with all flash, not bucktail)

If you need the recipe just Google Naked Ladies

All of these patterns work....but more important than the pattern (I have caught fish after fish on a nickel plated hook with only a tiny bit of floss on it), is being able to get the fly down to the fish and keep it on their dinner table. I recommend getting your hands on a sinking line (I like the Teeny lines, but there are other good ones), and fishing SLOW right on the bottom. Also, Keebranch turned me onto a fly that is now the ONLY fly I use on the Nolan River. It was developed by Andy Moreau and we call it the Moreau Fly. It is nothing more than a light jig hook dressed with red or chartreuse thread, and 4 2 inch strands of crystal flash for a tail. It has outfished every other fly in my box by a big margin.

No Himalayan pink yak underbelly? No cree hackles under jungle [fowl] eyes? No aftershafts from a great snowy owl? Almost kind of disappointing, isn't it?

It would look pretty bland in a catalog and then to have the caption beneath say "hottest sand bass fly ever!"

But I am gonna tie some up and hide them in some dark corner of my flybox as my secret fly.

People tend to greatly downsize (a small 1/32 ounce jig vs. a 3/4 ounce slab or three inch Sassy Shad) in a spawning creek versus a reservoir. Skippy didn't specify, but water body could make a difference.

What Budd described sounds much like a slender, sparse jig . . . probably not unlike the little jigs guys have such success with in the tributaries. Maybe these lures/flies suggest small minnows which might be the likelier forage in the streams.

Having said that, zonkers have been my best white bass fly, so far, in both a four foot wide creek and a 10,000 acre reservoir.

For those of you who don't know Andy, he is a guide. He works the Brazos river and it's tributaries and is a damn good guide. I hate to think that this little fly works as well as it does....it is just too damn simple...not enough drama or angst.
Here is a pic.....tied on a #10 jig hook....The "Moreau Fly".

The river...

The result...
