Hey all, I just moved to Abilene and am looking to find a few fishing spots. I'll be restricted the banks of the local lakes for a few weeks until I can get my kayak. Where would be the best places for me to try my luck?

Hey there...I have been going to school in Abilene for 3 and a half years now and fish about 2/3 of the days in the year ha. In less than a month the fishing @ fort phantom is going to be amazing. hybrid stripers start running and pre-spawn bass are in shallower water. There are also freshwater drum, Channel & blue cats, crappie, carp, and sunfish are also out there. Lake Kirby is pretty unique because of the saugeye. I have never personally caught one out there but I have caught a ton of carp, bass, and catfish out there. Right now the creeks running through the city have some good sized carp that are easy to catch and put up a good fight. If you have any questions I think I can answer them for ya. I have fished most places around here and stuff. I hope this helped a bit.

Phantom has good bank fishing. I use to walk the dam face with rattle traps and little georges for white and hybrids. The cove behind the dam can be good for whites/hybids/bass. If you see the gulls diving you can find some good fish. It is also good at the park and the inside of the cove by the dam if you catch shad and cast them out and let them sit.
Kirby is a great little bass lake. It has Saugeyes in it and I have only personally caught 2 in over a couple years of trying. Crappie are good in kirby at the fishing dock on live bait and jigs. I never catch them, but have seen folks.

Thank you both for the information! I really appreciate your suggestions and am looking forward to spending more time on my new local waters. I'm also really happy to hear that Phantom has a good bit of bank fishing access. That will certainly be the next lake I try!

Nothing big and beautiful, but you can't beat the fishing on Hubbard Creek Lake 60 miles east on HWY 180.

If you want to do some good bank fishing at Ft Phantom, Take FM600 North off of Interstate 20, About 1.5 miles after you pass FM600 Wrecking(several miles from I-20), there is a dirt road on the right, with a white street sign called Collins Dock Rd. Take a right. If you pass a little bait shop on the left, you have gone a couple hundred yards too far. It will go between a couple houses and old metal bldgs and end at a floating dock. I have caught some very good catfish there, and have seen people catch bass and crappie from the bank. When you get on the dock, you will be facing the Johnson Park boat ramp. Good luck.

PS: Danny Kings Blood Punch Bait works great here for the cats.
