I just learned that a very dear friend of mine, Mike Thomas from Kearney, MO lost his life while fishing on Lake Fork last Friday. It appears that he fell out of his boat but was unable to get back in and succumbed to hypothermia and cardiac arrest. He was wearing his pfd.

Mr. Thomas suffered from disabilities from his service in Vietnam and the Gulf War but found his solace in bass fishing, especially the big bass waters in his adopted state of Texas. He had just brought his trailer down to Fork and was planning on staying in Texas as much as possible.

I met Mr. Thomas 5 or 6 years ago at Purtis Creek. He was fishing from the bank and I invited him to fish in my boat. He proceeded to stick 2 pigs, a 7-8 and a larger one that jumped free, and that's pretty much how our fishing trips would go - I'd run the boat, he'd catch pigs! We fished several times together over the years and I can honestly say I've never fished with anyone who had a penchant for catching big bass like Mr. Thomas. Those fat girls on Fork really caught a break this year! God must've need a new fishing partner.

I know he met many TFF'ers as many of you have told me about meeting him at the lake. The service will be Thursday in Kansas City. Those of you who know him can pm me for details.

I've never asked this before but please say a prayer for Mike's family and friends.

Here's his PB 11.77 from Purtis Creek in 2005. Rest in peace my friend. You are missed.

Prayers for his family and maybe they can find solace knowing he passed away doing something he obviously loved. Nice tribute to your friend.

Sad.

But looks like Mr. Thomas really knew how to whack 'em in his day.
