I had it set in my mind that I would be going fishing this Sunday. I’m not sure why, but I decided I was going to go come hell or high water. The weather report was continuously being downgraded by the weatherman from day by day as it led up to this morning. Once I got too Evert's Resort I decided to jab a little with Dean from Everts. During that time I was loading my body up with Heat Factory insoles, body warmers, and hand warmers. My friend who joined me was doing the same trying to prepare for what was about to come. Not sure how I talked him into this crazy adventure.

Just before launching my boat the thermometer on my vehicle read -22F just before 9:00AM. At that point in time several swear words were going through my head. The truth is I have never fished open water in anything colder than about 10F before. I almost wonder if that is a testament to the Strikemaster Polar Parka in itself. After getting my boat to start which required a little more effort in the cold we were finally heading upriver. During that voyage there was constant sheath of ice across that river that was about 1/16 of that inch. It was just thin enough where I was able to plow through it without hurting my boat. It didn’t impede my pumps ability either. But man alive it was NOISY and difficult to see with the steam coming off of the water/thin ice.

After enduring all of this just too finally get to our fish area to fish. I had my doubts about the fishing and if it was going to be good. This turned out much better than I expected. To quote Dean the resort owner it was “stupid good” and he was sure right. Depths we targeted with the best success for vertical fish were 24-28FOW. After some advice from a friend I decided to go with a firecracker fluke on a chart/orange head. My partner followed suit and we had our limit by about 11:30AM. We squeezed out a few nicer fish and were off of the water by 11:45 AM. I really wanted to try to get into some fish “dragging” plastics because better quality fish seem to come into the boat with that presentation, but the skim ice on the surface ice wasn’t going to allow this. In less than three hours we boated over 30 fish. Not much to complain about there.
