At Ascension Bay i got a nice bone... and then a massive cuda (rolfmao)

Then on my resorts beach i got two of these weird fish... and then i caught like a dozen of these permit looking fish... and i hooked up with a nice cuda on accident while casting at those permit fish but he cut the line after a nice jump.. so we got a nice look at him.

What is this fish?

3rd one is a pompano, but the mystery looks like a ladyfish or a roosterfish but not either of those

If I had to take a guess at the last one it would be bluefish.

I'm no help with the mystery fish (that double dorsal fin is really throwing me...), but the permit lookin' one is an Gafftopsail Pompano I do believe - sweet catch on a fly.

i guess we may never know what that fish is!
i caught two of em so its not like it was just one random fish.

and they where very close to shore. like where the small waves break and they creat a little ditch in the water. Im guessing they run along that lookin for shrimp and little baitfish.

Well, if you ever find out let me know. I've caught several just like it and similar (single dorsal fin) while fishing beaches and casting just beyond the the first break like that.

Actually the Pompano could be that, or maybe a Palometa (but they all look pretty close to the same). Colors would help id that one. I was thinking Mullet for that strange looking transparent thing. Something's just not right about that fish.

I'm going to guess Pompano and mullet.

Its hard to tell from the picture...and mullet don't chase bonefish flys, in my experience.

Those cudas are an amazing fish....incredible speed. IMO, they are under rated as a sport fish on the flats.

I agree.... next time i go for bonefish im going to have a cuda fly with a steel leader ready and if i see a big boy im throwing it at em.... the guides didnt seem to be intrested in catching them at all. They were much more focused on the bones which is fine

Here are two videos i took while in Mexico.... the first one is a saltwater croc that was swimming by our boat until we spooked him.... the next one is a hug cuda next to the boat being followed by a smaller one. There where cudas everywhere! popcorn

Crikey! I'm thinking you want more than a 5wt to make a cast at a salty. Also, no wading in Mexico. smile

Altoids,

You may already know this so ignore if so....but those cudas will almost always respond to a big cuda fly that is moved through the water as fast as you can move it. Jan Isley showed me a technique for them that really works...use your rod to move the fly rather than the hand-over- hand technique. Move it as fast as you can and still keep the fly in the water.

Amazing to watch what happens...they are actually quicker than the eye. Just amazing.

Next time i go fly fishin on flats im going to have a cuda fly tied to a long steel leader that i can put on super fast just for that reason!!
I agree with you... and those suckers r very fast.... i couldnt even see that little one i caught when he took that crazy charley.
