Sam Rayburn has jumped up this week; almost a foot from the heavy rains; to 163.19. The water is still off color around the Attoyac and Angelina River.

Winter fishing on Sam Rayburn can be very challenging and this year is proving to be just that. All of the heavy rains have dropped tons of fresh water and really stirred things up. I’m not saying you can’t catch a trophy bass in winter because it’s been done more than once. The grass bite has been on and off. Traps and spinner baits have still been catching a few fish. Covering a lot of water is the key to finding a few fish that will bite. These fish are cold so slow the bait down from time to time and that may help put a few in the boat. There are a lot of fish in the grass and more will be moving up in the next few weeks. Get ready for some big fish to show up. Working the grass edges off points and drains in the coming weeks should produce some nice fish. They should start moving in for the spawn. We have caught a lot of good size fish this time of year as they move up to staging areas. They move in early only to be pushed back by the next front. That’s what makes this time of year almost magical, some days make you want to cuss then chunk your rods overboard while others are flat out awesome. Carolina and Texas rig on some of the drops and ledges will produce some fish and it could just be that trophy you’ve been looking for.
I did get out this week for a few hours and managed to pick up one nice fish on some offshore structure. She was full of eggs and leaked some on the deck. She will be looking for a nest before long. I also got some nice pictures of some of the offshore structure on the New Lowrance StructureScan. I hope to have them loaded on my site this week. You won’t believe the detail on some of it. I got some of it recorded on the unit and I am going to try to put it on video so you can see how darn cool it is.

Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and run thru April 30th. If you haven’t heard, it encourages anglers who catch a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this and one of them is that the angler receives a fiberglass replica of the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at 1-888-784-0600 Check out the Program rules at their site along with the Benefits. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tffc/sharelunker/

Crappie; The Crappie fishing has slowed down with all the rain and fresh water this week. This time of year you play with the wind as the fronts move through. Between the fronts there are usually a few days that the wind will lay down. Then we have some beautiful days to get out on the water and enjoy the fantastic fishing. If you aren’t in the mood to fish, kick back, relax, and tune into nature at its finest.
The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get you trips booked for next year.

God Bless
