I was wondering if you guys have tried or had luck with spinnerbaits in the bays? I was talking to a friend of mine and we were discussing lures and a spinnerbait he is doing really well on right now in the bays in the Galveston Bay area. He gave me one the other day. Says he's been killing it with this bait. Flounder, trout, reds, everything. And it's a really easy bait to fish too. Just cast and reel and finding the right speed to retrieve it to get the most hits on it. I know spinnerbaits are more for bass fishing and I have used spinnerbaits in the bays to catch trout and reds before but never used them as much as other artificial lures. But now I have a new bait in my arsenal !! The plastic bait is a little warped but he gave me one to have and I plan to get some more. It's called Red Fish Magic. At least that's what it says on the blade. And you can switch out the plastic bait pretty easy too since it has a clip so you can change or remove the bait if you want to use a different color or something. Just wondering if you guys have used this particular spinnerbait before or had luck with any particular spinnerbaits in the bays for trout, redfish, flounder, etc. Here is is:

I havent used that one, but I've caught reds in the marsh with a small, skirted spinnerbait, although I prefer a gold spoon with a short white trailer.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

The plastic part of that bait is specific to Redfish Magic, by that I mean it is made out of a different type of plastic. Very durable, try streching a fresh one out. I guess any jig head/plastic could be used with the spinner, but Redfish Magic plastic replacements are available. Problem is, and the reason that one is misshappened, is that the RM plastics don't store well with other types of plastics. According to packageing the spinning blade and attachment are 18K gold (plated I suspect) I've got one, keep it stored separate, haven't really given it a fair chance. Always have a lot of problems with grass where I fish.

They better be plated or the lure might cost $500 bucks at the price of gold.

Really it's just the blade, swivel and the wire, but I'm sure it's plate. I guess cuts down on corrosion in salt water. They generally run about $4, although I've found them on sale for less than $2.

Yes, the blade, swivel, and wire seem to be gold plated. This one he gave me has been fished in the salt and the blade and wire are in great condition and just needed to be cleaned. Good quality hardware and well made.
The hook on the jig head is good quality too. Don't know who makes it. Looks like Owner possibly from the style and design of it, but who knows. And it had a little rust but most of it came off and the hook is still ultra sharp too. It looks like a quality made spinnerbait. The plastic bait is warped though but it can easily be replaced. I think this one is an avocado color with red glitter.
But this friend of mine is doing quite well with it fishing Galveston Bay. Lots of flounder on it as well as redfish and trout too. He said it works on everything and has been catching a lot of fish on it working it slow with a tiny twitch every now and then. Just a matter of finding the right speed retrieve to use but right now it's working it real slow and on or near the bottom.
I plan to get some more and use them and see how they do.
I replaced the plastic jig with a similar Cocahoe Minnow one just to see how the action is in the water here on the lake and it's really nice.

Yeah, Cabela's here has them for about $3.50
I think Academy and Wal-Mart carries them too. But if I found them for less than $2 I would probably buy them all, hah hah. My friend was telling me he is using this bait a lot and doing really well. Doesn't matter the water conditions or what he is going after they catch everything from lots of flounder to reds and specks too. And it's a very easy bait to work, just cast and reel and let the blade and plastic tail do the work.

The avocado glitter is supposed to be the hot color in the RM's. I haven't seen the replacements on the shelf, probably just not looking hard enough. The old salt that turned me on to them did kinda' look sideways at me when I told him I'd paid $1.89 for mine. Was one of those strange sales though, the ones on the end of the aisle were marked $1.89, further down the aisle same product in a better choice of colors for $3.89. Tried at the register, sure enough rang up differently.

Go to the photo in the first post on this thread. You tie right where his thumb and forefinger are at. You pretty much have to use a blood knot for the tie. A loop wouldn't work nor a swivel.

Yeah, like Foldcat said just tie it right where my thumb is where the bend on the wire makes a small eye.
But my friend has been killing it with these in Galveston Bay. He likes to use the Avocado color with red glitter like the one he gave me but fishes other colors too. But you could pretty much use whatever plastic artificial you want since it is easy to switch it out since it has a really nice clip you can change the plastic jig quickly and easily.
But he said the plastic bait does last a long time. Like sputterfuss said, this plastic bait is specific to Redfish Magic. And it's very durable. My friend was telling me he can catch trout after trout on them and flounder and reds and the plastic bait stays intact and is not destroyed that easy like other plastic baits. You can take it and stretch it and it won't come apart.
They have them at Academy here. Some are $3.69 and others are $3.19. They only have about 4 colors though but do carry plenty of the Avocado color ones. In 1/8 and 1/4 oz.
I think what makes this lure so good is the blade. It makes a lot of vibration in the water plus it has a nice gold flash to it. Which is perfect for a fish to detect it easily and see the plastic jig and hit it.
My friend basically casts it out and lets it drop to the bottom. And slowly reels it till he feels anything different. When you cast a spinnerbait you'll feel the resistance and feel the vibration of the blade doing it's work. My friend was telling me sometimes he can barely feel the fish hit it, especially in the winter right now. He caught a huge flounder on one last week and said it just felt like he hung up on the bottom and when he reeled in and felt the resistance he knew he had a fish and turned out it was a huge flounder over 20 inches.
I don't fish for bass a lot but here on the lake I was just casting the spinnerbait out since I live right on the lake here. But I don't fish for bass much nor do I know a lot about bass fishing. Just playing around with the bait. And I had a slight backlash and after I fixed the backlash as I reeled in I felt some pressure. I though I was hung up on a rock or stump and was like oh man what luck on my first cast. And then I felt a good pull and after a short fight I pulled in a huge bass. Probably in the 5 pound range or more. It was big with real pretty coloration. And then I let it go. It must have hit the lure once it hit the bottom or something cause I didn't even have a chance to work it or reel in.

It works. Sometimes ... really well.
Attach most any soft plastic bait. I've used Corky's, Gulp!, Cocahoe, even old DOA Shrimp.
I'm also a fan of inline spinners.

I've been using them for years, ever since I saw how popular they were in the marshes of Louisiana near Lake Calcasieu back in the late 80s. The ones I started with looked virtually identical to yours, but were rigged with Cocahoe Minnows.
I've caught a few trout on them, but by and large I have had much better luck with redfish and flounder on spinnerbaits. That said, there's no doubt someone out there who regularly hammers specks with spinnerbaits.
The same way bass fishermen use various blade sizes and designs/finishes to slow or accelerate the rate of fall or degree of light reflection, saltwater anglers can also adjust to different water depths, color conditions, current flows and the like by changing up the metal presentation.
Blade baits allow an incredible amount of versatility. Willowleaf blades, being narrow, facilitate faster sink rates and more vibration at a higher frequency. Rounder Colorado-style blades, with much more surface area, significantly slow the fall. Color can be anything from gold to copper to silver, and dual-blade combinations of the same.
Spinnnerbaits don't work everywhere for everything, but in the right scenario ... particularly shallow grass, and along shoreline dropoffs ... they can be extremely effective.
After all, "blade baits" began with spoons ... a longtime lure design standard that to this day continues to catch a lot of fish in waters both fresh and salt, and in a wide variety of habitats.
Tight lines ...
Boz
