went out there last night around 10pm-12. Only saw 1 other fisherman on the bridge. Buddy of mine only caught 1 small channel cat. It was pretty damn cold and windy. 4 flood gates were barley open. Water level was low.

Going to Galveston this weekend.

Yes I am Micheal. I seriously thought that you possibly died as well. Either that or your wife had castrated you for fishing too much.

Went yesterday 8-11 and ate skunk. Clearly ultralight rig was not the way to go- successful fisherman were using surf rods and this huge bobber setup; SE Asian crew were pros at catching sandies.

Came back this AM 7-1030 with bigger rods and reels, but evidently still not the way to go - gotta throw surfrods and big bobbers I spose.. SE Asian crew rocked the sandies w/ 2/3 buckets by the time they closed the closer gate; Sandies pretty much turned off. One guy at the end closest to the dam was still catching one here and there on minnows on crappie rigs. Didn't see anyone else really catching down the bank - saw one channel cat and one sandy caught by people dunking minnows.

You don't need a surf rod and weighted cork to catch the sandbass there.

I agree on the LOL...all you need as a baitcast reel and some rooster tails and its game on at the Dam! you do need to get some distance out there to dominate..

Good to see Krazyfish yesterday. Guys, I've known Neil for a long time. Always good to see ya man!! May be down there again friday. The 2 gates open in the middle of the dam makes it a devil to kick across. But, I found that little sweet spot and would have gad a limit if I had gotten there earlier.

I agree - it ain't finesse fishing, but the SE Asian crews using their giant bobbers and surf rods were the only ones taking home limits. Everybody else either ate skunk or caught 1-2, fishing for hours on end. They're professionals in catching sandies cause they get it done, morning after morning despite whatever conditions/gates open while everybody else is leaving empty-handed. Not professional in the way people finesse fish, and I tend to consider those individuals anglers vs fisherman. Those guys are clearly fisherman. I'd assumed if it were legal, they'd be out there getting the job done with a cast net.

Anyways, it was fun although I ate skunk 3 days in a row. I'm tempted to come back with a big-[censored] surf rod and bobber combo just to get some action. There were two fellas there this AM that were actually chucking their rigs out PAST the two open gates in the middle and fishing a sweet spot right at the end of the current practically on the other bank side - THAT was impressive, if solely due to their accuracy in aim.

Well, happy Thanksgiving fellas, and hope to do more fishing in Texas in the future. I'll be getting my ice fishing gear ready for this season (also another first for me).

Tight lines,

Jay

In Hawaii, I was able to catch 2-inch Honolulu sardines with a surf rod and then subsequently a bass rod - as were all the fishermen on the bank.

As an aside, I was thinking though, through this whole 3 days there was one SE Asian guy who was REALLY consistent with his catching using the surf rod/big bobber combo; Others were using the same rig, but he always had better hooksets. I think the example of minnow & bass rod may, in a way, be apt, b/c I think it'd probably be pretty hard to feel a sandbass biting on that getup; There's got to be some skill in feeling that "nibble" and getting a good hookset. I bet it's not ALL that easy, especially when fishing's slow. That getup's more about getting the hookset, not necessarily "fighting" the fish on light line/rod. Sandies seem to be similar to Lake Michigan lake perch - not much fight at all. Anyways, just some observations. I don't think that getup's all THAT easy, but it certainly IS a way to get your rig out far enough.

Forgot to give a report. Well, since only two gates were open in the middle it was the slowest day fishing. Even the SE Asian crew didn't do so hot - single digit fish, aside from that one consistent fellow who had at least a half-bucket before they left. Guys fishing the right-hand end of the "bank?" casting past the current had single digit, but nice-sized sandies. Guys fishing the creek mouth down below seemed to be picking up some nice single digit numbers as well. Didn't see any other type of fish caught.

Looks like you'll have to pray for rain and hope they'll open up a nearer gate before fishing improves. Heard from some newbies that Texoma (although slow) was still better than Lavon today.

I got 6oz and 8oz modified cork for sale if anyone interested. thumb
You can chunk these babies against the 50mph winds and it would not tumble. You can chunk a mile with an ugly stick.

I don't know about you guys with surf rods and big cork combo catching sandies at Lavon Dam. I use a Walmart float with a 7' rod and manage to catch all the sandies I wants. Not to mention crappies too ........... !
Seem to me it is just too much work for sandies with surf rod. Now if there are big mama hybrids mixed with them sandies like a few years back, I would bring out my surf rod and cork combo too.

I guest do whatever you feel it would work ........!

Oh I saw an oldman caught a minnow with a chopstick ... or was it fly ... too much kunfu movies in the head ... hahahaha
