Are there any baitshops in the galveston, freeport area that sells live fiddler crabs?

Is there an easy way to catch Fiddler Crabs for fishing? I was told they slow down when the weather gets colder, is that true? They are soooo fast, just wondering how they are captured... Thankx ahead of time.

I would think you could set a couple of 16 foot 2x12's on edge in the sand making a large V with a net at the small end of the V. Herd them into the V and net them at the end.

Instead of a net, you bury a 5 gallon bucket at the end of the V.

Another method is:

Instructions
Things You'll Need:

* 5-gallon bucket Shovel

1.
Step 1

Locate an area around a bay, bayou, salt marsh or tributary with grassy land and several rocks, if possible. Sea walls are a great place to find fiddler crabs.
2.
Step 2

Dig a hole in the sand or mud with the shovel deep enough to put the bucket in so that only an inch or two of the bucket lip sticks above the ground.
3.
Step 3

Pack sand or mud around the lip of the bucket creating a hill around the mouth of the bucket.
4.
Step 4

Leave the bucket overnight if possible.
5.
Step 5

Upon returning, the bucket should contain all the crabs that you will need for your next fishing trip.

You mean you don't have to even 'bait' the bucket, they just fall in?

I didn't write it, just copied it from a website. I think they just fall in and the commotion of the crabs in the bucket attract others.

That's what I am going to try this week when I hit up freeport. I hope I can get a few fiddler's as I've heard they make the GREATEST sheepshead bait and I am hoping to catch my first sheepshead for the year!

Let us know if that 'bucket trap' works good or not as if it does, I will try it too.

You guys talking about these?????

I didn't know our coast line had these. They where PLENTYFUL when I was in Rio. The locals would wait until the surf hit and run down to throw sand back up to shore, whilest there'd be someone else waiting to shift thru it looking for crabs. They boiled them in beer bath and ate them whole with beer!

Fish with those sand fleas in the surf and you should catch some big whiting! That's their favorite food in the surf and that's why you don't have to cast out far to get them...since the sand fleas are close to shore when they are swimming, the fish are where the bait is.

I wonder if you were to put the sand flea in a very light weight mesh bag - very small mesh and very small bag, if the whiting would still eat it due to the smell. Piggy perch wouldn't be able to eat it quite so fast.

Well, I am used to finding sand fleas in the 1" and above size. You just put the hook straight through the sand flea and you should get fish. I can't imagine trying what you are asking, but it's worth a try.
We want to keep to the thread of 'Fidler Crabs' and not 'sand fleas.'

Sand fleas are super fast. Those are the ones that when say you walk on jetty rocks you see them and when you get near they all scatter super quick and hide.

How would you even catch a sand flea? Dig for them in the sand I guess right?
