Okay, outing myself as a geek, but. While talking with my hubby the other night, the subject of hosting games came up. I used to have a great deal of friends, and every thanksgiving, I'd throw an annual pre-thanksgiving shindig and feed everybody I knew.

We both really miss hosting stuff. One of the things we miss the most is playing D&D and various board games, and it got me to wondering. I know there's a few fellow geeks on here, and I dunno if anybody would be interested in playing board games and card games and just hanging out?

Just a thought. I'm probably gonna get flamed for asking, but just curious.

I would. I like dominos if that counts.

Of course. Love dominoes, and there's a ton of other games we could teach you that's related to 'em if you'd like to learn.

I really dislike tv, so we can go weeks without turning it on. Just picked up two new game systems. Not video games... HATE those.. but think of a game system like .. take for instance cards. There's a bajillion different kinds of games you can play with cards.. and with dice, and with dominoes, and then expand on that.

I'm always willing to learn. I may dull witted and slow but I like to try! Not much tv here either. I probably spend more time here than is healthy....I don't need to compound it with tv!

Annie might be interested as well.

But to give you an idea... I just walked into the game room and counted 66 different board games sitting on the shelf that we loved to play. Hubby ran a board gaming club in Arlington for years.

That's not including the multiple sets of dominoes, the piece pack, the ungodly number of decks of cards, the icehouse pieces, or the decket, tarot (it was originally developed as a trick-taking game with the "arcana" being your trumps... NOT as a fortune telling device), or majong.

Oh, and forgot the cribbage board wink

Hon, he specialized in teaching anybody and everybody who wanted to learn a new game. He loves to teach, and neither of us get the slightest bit annoyed with new players. We just love to play!

That would be really cool. I think you should toss it out there and see what happens. Cold weather means no fishy for me!!! Grand Prarie isn't too far away. Hey you goin to Hood for the BBQ deal?

smile That's precicely what I'm doing. Asking if anybody would like to play.

I strongly doubt that I could get down to Hood... no job means the road trips are limited, and both our cars have the check engine lights on. I've been dreaming about going fishing the past 6 nights in a row, but with cold weather, I'd rather not go out and freeze my tookus off and catch nothing other than a cold. I prefer night fishing and its miserable sitting out there in 50 degree weather (or colder) all night long by myself while I slowly freeze.

I played spades all through college, spents many hours as a kid playing board games with my cousins, and had some good times playing rummi cubes and scrabble, and trivia with my own kids.

Getting together for a game night sounds like a lot of fun, but driving all the way to the metroplex makes it hard to participate.

I haven't played cribbage in 40 years. In fact, if i can find it, I have a hommade board my Uncle made years ago that has never been used. Now if I could just remember how to play....let's see 15-2, 15-4, and a run makes 12???????

Grandpa, I do understand driving all the way out here would be a bit much, but its been about a year since I've been in your neck of the woods and I'm starting to miss it pretty bad. Next time we head to Caddo we could load up a couple extra games in the car and swing by wherever and play something.

I love visiting with folks over a game. Its just something I grew up with... and a whole lot more fun than everyone just staring at the stupid tv and not talking!

SHE is!

Touching on your other post about the lost art of visiting...I spent countless hours with my grandparents playing all kinds of board games, dominoes, Yahtzee, and the like. Just visiting...I miss it...but I still have a very close knit family and we just get together to visit and I enjoy the heck out of it. I miss my grandparents a lot...they were my best friends. I learned a lot from them...how to treat people. They were the ones that grew this big ole heart I have.

I love cribbage...my ex Canadian introduced me to it and it's one of my favorites!
