Burned my FIFTH coil in the XS yesterday. This is getting to the point of ridiculous. To make matters worse mercury just doesnt really care at all. My question is what happens when Im in the middle of Rayburn in 8 footers(happened last december) with no power? Any ideas would be appreciated on how to handle mercury.

Here is my thought....there has to be a reason the coil keeps going bad. Take to a real tech maybe even a Mercury Master Tech. I see you are in LA but call Mercury and ask where the closest Mercury dealer is with a master tech.

Was in Opti 2 school a couple of weeks ago. Mercury thinks they have it figured out and the new coils will be a running change.

What did Merc say about the coil failure and what are they going to do about it. Its not a good situation. They need to get off of their tails and fix this. Jeff Cloud a good friend of mine was running 100 miles to fish at the Bass Louisiana tournament and the second day of the tournament he was leaving the launch area and his boat would`nt get on plane, bad coil. If this would have happened on his return trip, not good. The Merc tecs their got him going again but this makes you real leary to go very far. Fished with Jeff at A.H. last weekend and right now the boat is slow to plane out and the motor will not turn over 5200 rpms. Sounds like another coil is going.

Who is making their coils now? Ford?

I have a 85 model with original coils.

i've heard there is a harness problem causing the coils to go bad.

one of my customers said they replaced the engine harness on his merc. and no more burned out coils.

just a thought.

Never had a problem with them on my '04 XS. But I have heard many horror's about them on the PRO XS's.

All I have heard Merc say that it is a manufacturing problem. If its the harness they need to jump in and fix it now.

I have a 08 250 pro xs and needed a coil after just 10 hours. Now I do not trust this motor. Had my yammie for 9 years and no problems and I miss it. Think about it; Merc has a good thing going here. They cover you under warranty but afterwards you will be paying for these coils so why should they change them. The 250 pro xs is a beast but again I just do not trust the motor. Really sucks when you cannot put a new puma on the trailer with a 250 because you have no power. I love my basscat but wish it had a yamaha.

What yr is the motor? At this point in time Merc. is having problems with '06 & up V-6 killing the PCM. There is a TSB out on this particular problem that Merc. pays for all six coils and a new PCM. Maybe with this info. you can persuade for Merc. to pay for six new coils. Courtesy of Cary's Mobile Marine Service.

The motor is an '08 and the shop we took it to (BPS bossier, where we bought the boat) said that there was no way mercury was gonna do six new coils. Im beyond frustrated with having motor problems. We have had the motor 15 months and have blown a coil about every four months.

All I would say is: My lawyer will be in touch! I can see a class action law suit because of so many motors with this problem. Get a copy of your boat motor service records while your their.

stump004--Have you tried calling Mercury yourself ??

BPS probably does not want to do the paper work to get Mercury to replace all the coils and the PCM. If it is still under warranty, they should not have a choice but, to replace everything, especially, if there is a bulletin on the problem. I hope you get it resolved. I have been looking at a boat with a 250 PRO XS, I would like to know all the problems with that motor before I go to my bank and fill out the paper work..

Please let us know the outcome..

Therein lies part of your problem. BPS Bossier. They have a horrible rep here in town for shoddy service. It took a friend over a year to get his trailer titled in LA on a boat he bought there. ( yes, we title trailers here.)
