So I have be around dolphin alot in my short lifetime but never have I seen something like I saw today.

So I was fishing the end of the surfside jetty when a pod of dolphin decided to share fishing grounds with me and my pop. A pod of about 5-8 of them were fishing about 20 yards away when I looked up and saw that one of em had a Big flattie in its mouth. I was like wtf? I told my pop and he just was like yea ok whatever. I thought it would be like a one time thing but they kept comming up with flounder and tossing them in the air and shaking them in their mouth. Kinda reminded me of my dog playing with her chew toy. I was just astounded that of all fish they were targeting they choose flounder off the bottom and then throwing them in the air. Geez what a site.

I have spent alot of time on the water surfing and fishing with dolphin but have never seen anything like this.

Just thought Id share.

Yup, dolphin are sort of like the Bugs Bunny of the sea.

I've heard stories of surfers or people out swimming and sharks being in the area and dolphins will actually charge at the sharks and mess with them to distract them and protect the swimmers. Since dolphins are much faster and smarter than sharks they like to taunt them. Sharks have teeth but they are slow and a dolphin at full speed in the water can charge and run into a shark and take off and really do some damage to a shark.

Red, we were fishing the south jetty at Galveston yesterday & the dolphins were doing more of the same of what you described ... saw them tossing large mullet, flounder, redfish and trout ... I'm sure they were getting other types of fish too, but I couldn't make them out.

That alone made the fishing trip worthwhile ... although catching 20# redfish didn't hurt!

Im not gunna lie the thought crossed our minds to cruise on over to the pod and see if we could snag an injured flat fish. No joke they were tossin any where from 17-20in flounder. to say the least I was interested.
