Now multiply those four by say 100's and what do you get? A nightmare. I hate snakes. And as others would say the only good snake is a DEAD snake!

The final member of the Texas poisonous snakes' hot list is the Coral Snake. This member of the Cobra species is found mostly near the coast or shorelines. This very venomous snake is often mistaken for the similarly colored, yet harmless King snake. Coral snakes have red and yellow bands that overlap and touch. Texans often use the saying, "Red on Yellow kills a Fellow! But red on black, friend of Jack."

I read on some other post that they don't care much for pepper spray. So I carry it with me in the yak.

the only time i've had problems with snakes are on lake levon. dont care much for the lake any more after i had a moccasin try his hardest to get in my yak next to me. typically a little splash and they'll take of, but two of them swam up to me just off a boat ramp and one decided he wanted a ride.

i dont care for snakes but i also dont wish them all dead. keep your wits about you and a little snakey wont be hard to convince to keep on swimming.

It is impossible to be a member of a species w/o being that species. For instance, You are a Homo sapien. Your species is sapien and your genus is Homo. Coral snakes don't even share a genus with cobras, genus Naja. They do, however, share a family, Elapidae. There are over 100 species of coral snakes, genus Micrurus and twenty 26 species of cobras, genus Naja.

Here is an example of the taxonomic break down on the coral snake within our range, Micrurus tener.

Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Chordata
Class Reptilia
Order Squamata
Family Elapidae
Genus Micrurus
Species tener

The break between cobras and corals lies at family.

I have always wondered about the water snakes in Texas. I did some looking up on the internet and found what I think is the most common here in North Texas. It is the Black Diamond Back snake, which always made me wonder if it was venomous. I see this snake all the time in Lake Arrowhead by Wichita Falls. Now I know and that you all for the post I learned a lot. Thanks!

It's funny I am also concerned about snakes in the kayak, and not the bass boat. However, the only time time i have experienced a snake in a boat was in the bass boat. and that boat was very nearly beat into a total loss. Lucky for the boat owner he only had an oar and not a shotgun.

The only water snake you need to worry about is the cottonmouth. However; you should also be aware that rattlers and copperheads can and will swim. I've been wading many times and have had diamond back water snakes use my leg or minnow bucket as a current break. No reason to be concerned about them, except for the fact they'll try to pull fish off your stringer.

I tend to be careful around all of them. Half in part to an irrational fear, but also due to the fact they a fella in my community was bit by a non-venemous snake and was in and out the hospital with a serious bacterial infection. I was told because they feed on carrion they carry bacteria in their mouths.Though, i have to admit this is the only time I have heard of this happening

You forgot about the famous Rattle-Moccasin. It swims, it rattles and scares Yankees to death when mentioned.
