schedule a booth at an art fair, dress like it's 1932. Put in your fake bad teeths, call your stuff primitive art and price in $1,000 increments.

But the truth is, this is a way to get people to show up and get interested in fishing who otherwise might not. One year at the McKinney Kids Derby a lady showed up wearing a few thousand dollars worth of clothes. She was real down home and told me that as a child her grandfather took her fishing and she wanted her kids to get a chance. They had a good day.

The theme ought to be Take A Kid Fishing. And if you make fun of me for posting this then you are a mean person who hates kids smile breakdance

I wouldn't really call those stockers trout. I guess this is a good thing for kids, but I just don't see the appeal. for the record I love trout fishing.

I guess there has to be some wet blankets in every thread. I, for one, do not see the appeal of bass fishing to the tune of $50,000 boats and $500 rigs. I would get bored to death having to wait in a tent for 2 days to catch a carp.
For some of you more experienced trout fishermen maybe you have caught your share of trout where there is no thrill anymore. Some of us are new to the sport of fly fishing, and get a big kick out of catching anything on a fly.
It's the hatchery stocked trout that got me back to fly fishing. I have caught some bass, a few catfish, and a bunch of sun fish with the fly rod. Last year I caught the stocker trout using a fly behind a plastic bubble. This winter I will use my fly rod and flies I tie myself. I hope to have as much fun as a kid.

well there you go. Grandpa just brought up a good point that i didn't think of. I still think there are better fish to catch in the winter than stocker trout, but hey each to his own.

"Piscator non solum piscatur" - Dame Juliana Berners.

The put and take trout are out there to keep the fishing active in the colder months, and to "beef up" the warm water fish that eat them. I say go for them. Learn how to tie some new flies. Practice making some fine tapered leaders. Practice dead drifting a fly in a moving current. Above all, have some fun!

Get involved with one of those groups that works with injured vets or cancer patients. Take some kids out and teach them how to fly fish. Hell, just get out with a group of friends and have a good time. Like my opening quote says, there is more to fishing than catching fish.

Hey, if it bites and fights, I am all for it, I don't care what it is. My problem is that here lately I have gotten all bite and no fight from the stick fish and nothing else.

Although I would like to try to catch a rainbow, I would have to drive two hours to get to the closest one stocked pond. Bummer, but maybe I will get a job after graduation that is closer to one of those stocked ponds.

I agree with Grandpa. Fishing for stocked trout is what got me to want to try the fly rod out again, and tie my own flies. So I think that is good for the sport, to bring in new people. Otherwise I would of been quite happy and still using conventional stuff if not for the stocked trout. I wanted to use a fly rod a long time ago, and bought one, couldn't figure it out...(didn't have the internet back then)...and the rod was put up, and forgot about.
The thing I like about the stocked trout is, they like the cold, and I like it better than the monstrous heat....so that works out both ways. I love to eat that stocked trout too, and it isn't as good as wild trout, but it can be made tasty enough with a little bit of spice. If you don't like trout fishing, why even read this thread? You might like to try to rain on somebody else's parade...but really the thing is, people who like to catch stocked trout..in larger ponds and lakes...love it, and there is nothing you can say to take that away.

I'm not sure that I've ever fished for a trout that wasn't stocked. In OK the LMF is stocked, the Blue river is stocked, in TX the Guadalupe is stocked, in AR the White and Norfork are stocked, Dry Run Creek is next to the hatchery, in MO Lake Taney is also next to a hatchery, the list goes on. For that matter, weren't all of the Brown trout brought in from Europe originally?

So, what's the big deal about stocked trout?

Now I will agree that standing elbow to elbow as the stocking truck dumps the trout into a small pond is not the most enjoyable way to fish, but it is the only option available to a lot of people.

Rex

Fly fishing in moving water has a whole new set of challanges. That's the appeal for me, plus I'm outside which is what matters most.

Last year I had to fight off a Blue Heron who was after a sizable trout I was fighting. That was a most memorable fish.

Here's some information on the Lewisville tailrace. I went this summer (no trout), but caught some LMB. There are also stripers (I think) and carp immediately below the dam. It ain't Montana, but it's closer.
