I just went through a search for a canoe and bought one a couple of months ago.
Because of the reviews on the pelican I went with a used Old Town and ended up paying less than the new pelican and I am very pleased.

Where did you get the used Old Town? At craigslist?
Also, is it mountable on top of an SUV?

I actually bought it from Rochells, I think most all of the canoe rental places sell some of their older boats during the fall.
It was by far the best deal I found after months of searching for a great deal.
I bet you could still find some for sale, it may be worth a few phone calls.
The rental places buy durable quality craft that take a beating.
I am VERY pleased with what I bought, and yes, I put on my 4-runner
I almost bought the pelican from dicks because of price, but I just saw too many reports that reflected poor quality.
Let me know if you decide to call rental places and I'll be wondering how you do.
