i was wondering how many of you are using a canoe w/ or w/out a trolling motor. i am thinking this is going to be the easiest and defiantly one of the cheapest ways for me to get on the water in a boat. i just moved to abilene and have been told unless i want to drive 4 hours that Fort Phanton is about the best of my chance at bass fishing, any info would be awsome, thank you in advance

Canoes rock,
You can stand in 'em

and bring a dog

and pack more stuff

I 'one man' my canoe all the time

keeps a guy working,

which is good for the heart

True dat.
I also use a canoe. I plan to get a yak one of these days but I'll always be a canoe man first. You can get a good used canoe for abut $300 bucks, paddles and a lifejacket and you're ready to go. No noisy motor, don't have to buy gas, don't need a trailer. You can sneak up on wildlife. In my head I'm always in a canoe on a river.

I have both a yak and canoe--My yak is not one the better ones like many of these guys have on here but I use my canoe probably five times to one. Its more cumbersome to transport but I love that I can take someone with me, or more equipment when I camp.
I rally would just decide by thinking if you want to fish alone a lot if you don't have buddies that have a yak also.
You can prob. get into a canoe cheaper but you can also get some great deals from the classified section on this forum.
For a canoe I would hit Craigs list first.
Good Luck and welcome to Texas!

If old Daniel Boone or Lewis and Clark floated in little pretty plastic kayaks instead of canoes, America today wouldn't be uh, well, uh...

You just go on some and think about it.

Thats all I am saying.

Those BIG old Grumann Aluminum canoes really tamed the wild west. And they made America great.

I dont own a canoe or a yak, but I am fairly educated person. I had no Idea that the canoe had any part in tameing the wild west.lol I thought they rode horses. Thanks for the laugh. clap

thaks for all the info again, i was defiantly going to check out craigslist, with a 4 month old it's hard to find alot of extra cash. i was also thinking defiantly canoe just becuase to me it seems more versitale for my purpose, i can go alone ,but also bring a buddy or 2, room for gear if i want to go camping for the week, and i wouldn't need that big of trollnig motor and battery so that would be a little cheaper than if i needed one for a bigger boat. mainly just thinking cost effective here, oh yeah someone also said to try lake colemen about 30 to 45 min from me

whoops forgot to mention what canoe i was looking at, the one i like right now is the Mad River Adventure 16, has a spauare off transom to mount the trolling motor and spot for battery, the reviews on this seems mixed, most enjoy but a few maybe 30% to 35% say they don't like it and it flips to easy, my canoe experience is wells lets just say very limited but i have never flipped one. thanks again

I also have heard a lot about the Mad River being very unstable. Even though you might not flip it, you do not want a boat that you feel you are constantly working to maintain balance. You will sacrifice energy and lose tracking. Just a thought. Good luck with whatever you go with and enjoy the experience.

I would never put a trolling motor on anything that I could paddle. It sort of defeats the purpose of it. Plus then you have to register it and pay fees. I have a heritage redfish kayak and love it. I go fishing a lot by myself and a canoe is just too much to portage by your self. You will be limited in that you need someone to help you when you load and unload it unless you have a boat ramp. I do like the fact that one of my buddies has a canoe. His canoe is usually the "mother ship" and is totally loaded down with all our [censored]. They do make a canoe/kayak hybrid called a native ultimate which is pretty nice. But over all I prefer a kayak over a canoe.

In Tennessee I had a 15' canoe that I single-handed. Sat in the forward seat facing the stearn to keep my weight better centered. I made a trolling motor mount and used a 30# thrust motor and felt that I could have pulled a skier. I had no trouble cartopping the canoe but I think handling the battery for the tm gave me a hernia. The battery was placed forward for even better weight distribution and stability. For really super stability google "gheenoe."

from what i hear about putting a gas motor on a canoe, that about a 3HP would be the max size. i would also end up paddling most of the time but for lakes that might be bigger, or rivers that might be longer, or even paddling upstream a good distance, i think it would come in handy, but that is just my 2 cents

We paddle the Brazos this weekend, and there was a guy in a canoe with a trolling motor with another guy/son in a kayak. We exchanged small talk and jokingly told him he was 'cheating'. We all had a good laugh at the end of the day after the wind had turned tnto a strong southernly, and we pulled over to a potential campsite breathing hard and tired paddling against the relentless wind; he passed by relaxed and content guiding his motor powered craft laughing and saying 'See?!'

I debated a lot about the canoe vs. kayak vs dinghy. I wanted something I could put on top of the car roof racks myself, with maybe a little help from my 11yr old boy, that means about 80lbs max. I wanted the option of taking my 3 boys fishing, meaning it had to fit 4. Kayak was out, and canoes were too heavy. I ended up purchasing a porta-bote www.porta-bote.com. It does everything I need. I bought mine used on craigslist. I put a trolling motor on mine so it has to be registered with TPWD.

For something cheaper, you might also want to check out some 9ft wooden dinghys, some are only 70lbs and cost $500.

What Dave said. I've got a 16' Old Town that's too much hassle to paddle solo on open waters. I'd much rather be in one of my kayaks.

I got a Mad River 14 footer. So far I love it.I also have a couple of Rides (Wilderness System). They are great for a day trip and I have done overniters in them but the canoe will be my choice for overniters now.My brother said if it fits in the truck take it,so I say if it fits in the canoe take it.Dutch ovens, camp stoves,Big ice chest, lawn chairs, but I preferr to paddle.I had years of the batteries are dead or the registrations expired or the motor wont start or the trailer tags are expired.Give me the simple life.Enjoy your canoe.

Phantom and Coleman could maybe might be ok to canoe on days the wind is down. Lake kirby is just around the corner and has a decent bass population. Coleman is a good lake, but along haul from the ramp to better fishing. I personally would not put a canoe in any of these lakes with the exception of Kirby and a float tube would be better. They get rough fast from either wind or too many boaters during the summer months. Bank fishing is really decent along Johnson park on Phantom and around the dam. They hybrids are in shallow right now in the back of the cove across from Johnson park. Fishing is kinda tough here so good luck.

20 miles down the Brazos with a good headwind and loaded with gear, trolling motor is sweet.

I have a 17'2" Old Towne Penobscot. Love it. Got it at Gander Mountain in Corsicana, where it had sat on the shelf for several years. So, I got a really good deal on it. I can fish up to 3 people out of it. Camp out of it. Etc... That said, if I had no price limit and just wanted a canoe to fish from, I would look seriously at these...

<http://www.riverridgecustomcanoes.com>

They are too pretty. Just makes me want to fish.

I have tried a kayak a couple of times. They were cheep rentals, and not enjoyable to fish from. However, I know a guy who fly fishes for stripers on the Red, below Texoma, from an Ultimate. He loves it.

If you go with a canoe and add a trolling motor, remember to check state regs. Once you motorize it, you will most likely have to register it.

I, 110% newbie, am also considering a canoe. Likely use for Lake Houston and Christmas Bay. I'd really like to hear your comments on the Pelican Dakota Canoe

http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=co...0142-02305-5010

Also, is it possible to use a car rack (76 lbs)? Really like to be as mobile as possible...

Thanks.
