I visit this lake alot .. lately I have heard from the workers there that the lake has new owners... a worker there told me that 11/30/09 was their last day of employment there. the new owners take over...does anyone have any info on this or what the new owners plan to do??? the back end has been closed for over a year now and it would be intersting to find out if the new owners plan to reopen it .. or what they plan to do with the lake for that matter...any info would be great.. thanks in advance.

So far, and I've been checking with SARA, they have no news at all from CPS what, if any, changes will be made. All I know for sure is that those with a park pass, they will be honored until they expire. I'll be talking to SARA again tomorrow for more information, i will post anything I find out....

When I was out there 2 weeks ago, i talked to one of the employees that would have a reason to know what is going on and he tells me that the new owners former experience is in managing time shares confused

That the new owners dont even have equipment to take care of the lakes, and will be hiring part timers who will apparently have to drive their own vehicles to patrol the lake..

Guess we will see

Laterz,

Hopefully it will be run by someone who wants to actually make a profit and that doesn't mean just by raising the fees, and thus offer services that will generate a demand for those services that will be popular, instead of someone who just wants to rake in the profits, do nothing, and cut cost to offer less for more which is the recepe for disaster and will drive away the crowds.

i don't really understand what new services they can offer...not much to me they can do but just clean up the lake a little...maybe run tighter rent-a-cop "security", but it's a fishing lake..that's what you do there...fish. Im just hoping we can still fish after these bozo's take over

There are things that they can do, and it would be a vast improvement from what has been the norm.

True it's a fishing lake but what about the bank fishermen?

They could start by building decent fishing piers and maybe an enclosed one with a lighted fishing barge for starters.

When they built the original pier they seemed to have stuck it off out of the way as an after thought, and in the back end of a shallow cove to boot. Why not have one extening out from the bank that had a deep channel drop off, kind of like the area in front of the Island between the two launches for instance, or one of the points there close to the dam?

Also a marina with rental stalls, and boats and motors that are maintained, and how about a bait house with live bait, a tackle store, and maybe even a restaurant like they had in the early days where you could sit out on the patio overlooking the lake and eat one nice juicey hamburger fries that would hit the spot after a long morning of fishing.

How about cabins that you could rent for a few days or overnight? Maybe several screened in shelters for day use also a nice touch.

All these things cost money, and would drive up the entry fees for certain, but if someone wants to attract business and run it as one, they have to expect to spend money to make money.

For years, and I'm not alone, I've wondered what SARA did with all that money they collected because many years would go by without any improvements, and then when they did occur is was mainly out of necessity because things had deteriorated so badly.

It's a shame because they could have really done some good things out there, with proper management.

That's just my honest opinion, and I'll get down off my soap box now!

sounds good actually! i guess i just really never thought about that stuff because it doesn't interest me...but i definetely see it being a good thing. I however tho am not willing to pay double for say just to have a lighted pier or tackle store convenience... see plenty of redfish n cats caught off the bank...who really needs a pier to get in the way... that's just me though. Either way i just hope we are allowed to still fish LOL.

Your are right, and whom ever runs the operation will probably do very little, and still end up raising the entry fees anyway, so look for paying more for less, and if they charge too much it will justify just heading down the road a ways to Choke, which isn't a bad thing!

+1! I really hope the new management is in it to make it better. I'll pay a few $$ more for a better facility. And, focus on fisherman on at least one of the lakes! Seems every one wonts to make them into water parks.

It is the best place close to fish so I hope they don't change that. Everything is going up so we can expect that prices will go up as long as it stays a fishing lake I can accept that. If you have to drive to three rivers (Choke) I would probably go on to the coast.

The new managers undoubtly feel that they can run the park and make a decent profit. I can forsee a large cut in wages, minimum manning, an increase in fees. After that, they may charge for everything..a pier fee, a rod fee, a launch fee, cleaning station fee, restroom fee...just like the airlines. Like the guy said..changes are coming, let's hope for the better.

I am more of a realist than an optimist, but I don't know how effective a cabin situation would be that close to a major city where hotels abound. I would like to have a place to stay out there, but then I fish a lot at night and just want to crash and shower before my trip back. I can imagine the weekend crowd gets loud and the security at any cabin facility would be questionable at best. It would be a nightmare unless there was a lockable storage area for each cabin.

The lake is first and foremost a cooling system for the plant, and everything else is going to be secondary. That said, I don't think the city of SA would allow those lakes to be just strewn along, because they are big revenue for the city. Other than Medina, they are the only big lakes around until you get to Canyon or Choke, North and South.

I cannot think of much that needs to be improved at the lake, but then I show up and launch my boat and head out. I don't bank fish there (though I used to long ago). I think a floating fishing barge would be a good idea in that cove, why not? Keeping two or three regulars from camping there with 40 rods would be a challenge, but then there would have to be restrictions and someone would have to actually police it. That could be the real change, the enforcement of regulations by people other than just Game Wardens and SARA.

I cannot see them charging for cleaning fees and restroom fees, people would just trash the area more than they already do. I would like to see more or larger trash containers so trash isn't strewn along the ramp and parking area.

As you know, CPS is the over all manager of Calaveras, they are in big financial streights...I wouldn't look for many improvements, especially if they cost money. I feel we are going to be lucky if things remain about what they are. Admission is bound to go up. I hope I am wrong, but in today's climate, I think I am being a realist.

I googled "thousand trails" & this is what I came up with. If this is the company that's going to run Calaveras, get out your pocketbook!

We should see "change" out there in the management style. But don't think for a second they will make tons of changes all at one time. Business 101-do not make your customers mad!

They have done their homework on this one. Companies do not just jump at situations without thinking them through first. Is there reason to be skeptical? Sure... But they know what makes them the most money out there "fishing" and they will exploit that to best of their ability.

One thing we all hope to see is better facilities and just a better kept park. Be on the look-out for park employees to harass you a little more to make sure your doing the right thing out there and that actually is a good thing. Don't be surprised if they check your boats for creel limits and they will most likely be writing some tickets out there to keep everyone honest.

Will the fees go up? Maybe…. But if there is new facilities and better policing then it’s worth it in my opinion. But change is hard to deal with sometimes. I hope the company is ready for all the crazy people at those lakes... I get a good laugh every time I am out there! But it is a fun place to go for some decent fighting reds.

What I gather from their web site is they operate the world's largest network of private membership camping resorts known as preserves to the members. Most are either on a lake, river, or close to the ocean. Their sites offer RV sites, cabins, cottages, swimming pools, mini-golf, sport courts, family lodges and miles of hiking trails, all protected by 24 hour security. I hope that not what they are looking to do at Calaveras, it would sure hurt my fishing time.

I think that is exactly what they have inmind for calaveras. They are a big company...why should they fool with a little dinky operation. I expect to see a lot of construction going on out there & then a big sign at the gate that says "for members only" check this website
