I will be glad to see that stuff killed off, if they can get it sprayed, and then get some of the community members to ban togather and round up the rest and burn it. That will go a long way towards saving the lake!

Livingston had a bad problem with the hyacinth, it was matted up against the saw grass. The grass was at least far enough out in the water to provide adequate cover. When they sprayed the hyacinth they also sprayed the grass, both died and with that said there was no more cover. The fish packed their bags and left! The lake continues to have a minor problem every year with hyacinth but that year it was BAD! Sad thing is it is taking along time for the saw grass to rebound back out into the water.

Well maybe if they catch it out there in the middle they can get a big chunk of it and not kill off the good grasses.

Meteorologist James Brown has developed this analogy to put the amount of water being released into layman's terms. Here is his example.

Each gate at Toledo Bend has been opened 4 feet.

The total release of all eleven gates is 4,369,371 cubic feet per second. (4.3 million)

That number translates into 262,162,285 gallons per minute. (262 million)

At that rate, this amount of water could fill 437 Olympic-sized swimming pools every minute."

another perspective is 5,280 cubic feet a second is one square mile of water one foot deep.
the release of 4.3 million translates to about 827.53 sq. miles of water one foot deep.
or 55 sq. miles 15 ft deep.
I think the math is right

They were flying around the house Saturday. Went down to Newell's and watched them spray the mouth of Patroon. It's unbelievable the amount of hyacinth out there!

SO last night i went fishing got back around 1:00am the wind was blowing from the north east and im on the texas side of the lake...started seeing alittle bit of the silvinia and hyacinth coming into the cove...isnt the first time so I thought...no biggie ill just wake up early and rack it out and burn it like me and my neihbors always do....so i wake up at around 6 or 7am to such a wonderful suprise...

Toward the mouth of the cove

Off the patio

Some of the pics didnt work for some reason but u get the drift.
This was a horrible site to see....and its not the only cove like this...what really sucks is i live right by the bluff so the wind is blocked from most directions so the only way this stuff is getting out of here is a hard west wind...and i mean it has to be blowing pretty good cause all the land has a pretty hard slope into the water causeing it to block most wind....

Toledotee i havent been to Lowes creek in a week or two....last time i was there the water was very stained all the tree tops toward the mouth were under water(since then the water has came down over a foot)....only caught a few on a spinnerbait(...u guessed it andi coleslaw.....hahaha)and trickworm i was hitting all the new submerged brush but the water being so stained had a big impact on the fishing....Everyones propery looked ok no boathouses underwater or anything that i seen....i only went right pasted were the boat lane markers stop....so im not too sure were ur located....I wanted too check it out today actually but im land ridden till all this clears out...ur looking for a fishing buddy let me know....haha

Also i heard they were done spraying...something like 2,000 acres or 20,000...dont quote me i forgot what my neihbor said and that everything thats been sprayed had some kinda dye on it...well none of this had dye on so its still growing....hopefully they get more funds for it or continue spraying soon

So how will the spraying affect the under water hydrilla beds? Will the herbicide drift away and kill for a long ways away from where applied or kill deep hydrilla beds?

HOLY COW HardHook! barf What cove is that? I sure hope Lowes Creek ramp ain't the same. If so, I'm hoping the guvment folks will have the ramps at Indian Mounds clear. If all else fails, reckon I might have to make a few days at Rayburn, I sure hope not.
I'm really curious myself if that herbicide will get the hydrilla, that will be nothin short of a disaster. flush

Google Aquamaster by Monsanto. It does not effect submerged vegetation, only emerged plants with leaves.

They didn't spray near the shore because it would kill trees or grass if it got on them.

The vast majority of the big huge mats came from the north end of the lake above Tenahaw.

thanks, that's good to know about the herbicide. I figured most of the salad came from further up North. Be there this afternoon and will get on the water tomorrow, I hope it's manageable to run the boat and fish.

With the amount of flow the is going through the bend, there will not be a big effect on the lake itself as far as fish movement. Most of this stuff will be through the gates before it ever dies.

Wish I had some good news about the salad going over the dam, but it probably will not happen.

You see, the gates are pulled up to release water which means that the discharge is several feet below the water surface. Since the plants float then the gates would have to be pulled closer to the surface in order to release any floating vegetation and that would mean that a tremendous amount of water would be turned loose making a major flood downstream.

The generator inlets are also below the water surface which precludes a lot of vegetation passing thru them.

There may be some good news. "The Toledo Chronicle has quoted TP&WD as saying that other action would be necessary...... "

I saw them spraying just north of the bridge in the main lake near Patron. I fished the Texas side from the bridge to Patron and it's everywhere along the shoreline. If they are not spraying along the shoreline there will still be massive amounts in the lake. Getting this stuff under control will require a massive undertaking and I have no clue how the authorities will get it done. I am sure the spraying helps and appreciate all they are doing but it's like throwing a cup of water on a barn fire.

Like Todd said, the basin is full of it. It's getting almost impossible to fish the cypress trees and buck brush in the Basin as the lillies extend 30-50 feet from the banks and you can't get to the structure. It seems like that is the way it is heading in Toledo Bend. I hope not........
