I will be heading down to Galveston November 15-20 for a training class and would like to do some fishing during the evening when I get out of class. I was hoping that someone on here would be able to give me some information of some good areas that I can walk into, to wet a fly for a few hours in the evenings. I looked on Google Earth and noticer a few rock jetties along the sea wall but that is all I have been able to come up with so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't care what type of fish you catch try to find a lighted pier that is low to the water and you can catch more small specks and sand trout with the occasional skipjack then you can handle. Small shrimp flies, clousers, and crazy charlies will work best.

The lights are the best bet for the casual visitor looking for a quick fishing trip, but dont be afraid to venture out onto those jetties either. I haven't heard whether the red tide has made it that far up the coast or not; if it has, I don't know how good your chances will be.

Thanks for the heads up on the red tide i will have to look into that. I will probably just hang out around the piers since I dont know the area that well. Going to have to look for the lights at night.

How late into the year does the fishing at the lights remain good?

You'll also be there during the week and that usually makes fly fishing from a pier easier. You don't have to worry about people walking behind you or getting pissed because you are out fishing them with a technique that "IS NOT" suppose to be used in the salt.

As for the red tide I'm not sure if it made it that far north seeing on how once the cold front blew in last week it left Port A and is now in Corpus Christi Bay. I fished near Corpus Christi bay today and didn't notice any itchy throat or coughing so I'm not sure if it's still in the surf at Packery.

Pretty much year round. During the winter months all I do is fish the lights. I would like to branch out and fish some during the day this year though.

I just spoke with one of my friends who lives and fishes (constantly) near Galveston and they said the Tide wasn't a factor up there, although this hurricane business is sure to change things up for your trip.

Are yall talking about the pay piers in the surf on the sea wall?
Arent those a little high on the water for fly rods?

What other public lighted piers are there?

The only ones I know of are the private ones on pelican island area and are reachable by kayak.

You're right the pay piers are usually much too high off the water to be practically flyfished. Scout300 and I live and fish around Corpus Christi and have limited knowledge of the exact places you will be able to find flyfisher-friendly places to try; I will email the aforementioned friend for you and see if they know of any specific places you can try to find. Again, with the storm surge already here that is sure to play a factor in fishing gulf-side piers so be aware of that also.

You can also wade the lagoon on the East end of the island.
It is easy access and rather shallow.
Try google or google earth to find out eactly where I'm talking about.
Wade the shore line as quiet as you can and cast to hot spots.
You see a LOT of bait activity with a moving tide.
Fishing here can be hit or miss depending on the flow of water into the lagoon.
I've fished it at good times and caught lots of smaller fish on poppers. It is a known flounder spot for the giggers and bait chunkers.
Wade SLOW. There are rocks / rip rap and Ike debris which can be dangerous. Watch for drop offs as you get away from the bank.
Last time I went in late spring, fishing was off, which is why I dont mind hot spotting it now.
Who knows though, it could be right on now.

You want a pier low to the water for sure.I have fished Indian Point pier in Portland and Copano pier with a fly rod and it's some 10' from the water, I wouldn't recommend it unless you had a drop net. Being that high from the water will also cut your casting distance down some.

All the info is greatly appriciated. On google earth I noticed a lot of what looked like rip rap wall coming out of the sea wall. Are those accessable for fishing? Again thanks for all the info.

If the wall you're talking about is perpendicular to the seawall, then I'm pretty sure what you're seeing there are the jetties.

I'll qualify that I've never really fly fished the jetties, but yes they are accessible and can be productive from what others say.

There is a ton of info out there on fishing the jetties.
Just be careful, those slippery rocks can be dangerous.

If your fishing the jetties it's a good idea to make a stripping basket as well. Those giant rocks will wear out your fly line pretty quick.

If you don't have a stripping basket it's still doable, just find a big flat rock to stand on to keep your line from going between the rocks... Which, by the way, will eat an $85 flyline like a tootsie pop - a few licks, then a nibble, and then you're looking at the core of your line. Not that I have ever done anything like that before.
