the other day before that large cold front came in i went to Tom bass park in S Houston and the fish were very agressive i caught several good sized fish, but here is the wierd part... they had bloody tails just like they were spawning... i kept a couple and sure enough when i got them home they had eggs in them... has anyone ever heard of this happening in the fall. the only thing i can think of is the drout we had might have made them have an early spawn... but either way, wierd to me...
i have a pic, but i dont see how to add it...???

There were some ponds up in northern Oklahoma I used to fish regularly years ago. Seven ponds, the far north and the one just below it, water never went below 60s.

Winter time, snow on the ground, catching bass on fly rod poppers was sort of strange, but lot of fun.

First 2 0r 3 ponds, spawn was pretty disorganized, some early year, some later on, guess it was the little-changing water temperatures.

Definitely possible. Bass in Florida lakes are pre-spawn in Nov/Dec.

This has come up a few times on here, some SWEAR its not biologically possible, but I have actually seen fish on beds in the fall on fork and the guides on Fork will tell you around the new and full moons in the fall a few fish will spawn.

yup, went back today and caught another one and it was actually dripping blood out of her tail and she hit my lure right at the bank... scared me to death...lol

but yea, the fish the other day had eggs in them so stirring up crawfish could not be it... Apparently they are able to spawn early... oh well right... more bass... smile

A fall spawning season is not unusual at all, especially with weather like we've been having recently. I cleaned 6 bass Monday that had eggs.

almost all fish SHOULD have eggs in them by now, the same eggs they lay in the spring. this is completely normal.however, some do go through the spawning ritual in the fall but dont actually spawn, i think.

Usually if the bass has a red,or bloody tail,it is gonna be the buck bass(male),and yes it is common for the fish to start producing eggs this time of year.It is possible the weather,an water temp has the buck bass throwed off.The buck bass does almost all the fanning of the beds he will even come back after the female lays her eggs,run her off an oxidise the bed(fan).Im not saying the female will never have red tail,but its usually the male.

Similar to humans, except in humans the redness is caused by the female chewing on the male's tail.

Don't see how there can be more bass if you are keeping them and depleting the breeding stock. Not against keeping fish, but you have to be very careful in urban environments. Not only you, but other fishermen can quickly change the dynamics of a pond if there are no restraints, even on posted limits.

Don't see how there can be more bass if you are keeping them and depleting the breeding stock. Not against keeping fish, but you have to be very careful in urban environments. Not only you, but other fishermen can quickly change the dynamics of a pond if there are no restraints, even on posted limits.

They were put on this earth for us to eat not to mention i pay alot of money for my fishing lic. and im entitled to keep five bass per day, the money i pay goes to texas parks and wildlife who stockes this pond EVERY year with LM bass, trust me they dont seem to be hurting at all... having said that i havent kept anymore since the other day when i found eggs... so CHILL OUT.

I agree with the pond situation for removing the fish. i fish several golf course ponds where u can catch 40 fish an hour and they'll all be 1#.

This is the same thing that had happen to ray robt's where the TPWD removed the slot. Too many small fish eat the forage for the big ones.

If they were on South Houston, their tails were bloody because they were trying to push the lake elsewhere... laugh

Didn't mean to to ruffle your feathers. I am very chilled cool. Fishing alot does that for the soul, as well as a relationship with the #1 fisherman. Just hate to see honey holes get fished up, especially in urban areas. Then everyone loses.

I think the Tom Bass Pond is about 25 acres, I have seen that an average lake will hold about 50 bass an acre, if managed correctly. If by law you can harvest 5 fish a day, that is over 1800 fish a year, just for you. So by law you would be able to deplete the entire lake of its bass in less then a year, if you only kept your legal daily limit. I am not trying to get on your case. Just making a point that with the amount of pressure urban ponds receive, they can be fished out legally very quickly. I hope that doesn't happen to your pond.

Yes, there is evidence of some Bass spawning in the Fall. It happens on Fork. Ask some of the experts that have caught them off the beds this time of year.
