I have always heard the term Mud cat before but wasnt sure what species of catfish it was describing. I hear people refer this name to catfish found in ponds or stock tanks but what species are they and are they found in lakes and rivers?

I always thought a polywog was the same as a chucklehead. We catch them in our lakes and ponds around here. they look like a channel cat on crack. They have big round heads and real skinny bodies but have the color of a channel. They are definetily not flat heads. i will take a picture of one next time i catch one.

I just thought about looking on the Texas Parks and Wildlife webpage and it says that there are two Bullhead species, a yellow bullhead and a black bullhead. Both are refered to as Chuckleheads and Polliwogs but is says that the yellow bullhead is also refered to as a mud cat. Is the easiest way to recognize them by just looking for a rounded tail fin instead of the V type tail fin that they channels, flats and blues have, besides color?

Do you guys eat them? I always just throw them back, they just dont look like they would taste as good as a channel or Yellow to me, they always look sick.
