Ran into a "know it all" angler here in the metroplex who argued w/ me and called me a retard for using spit to lube my knots. His point was that there is stomach acid in saliva that immediately breaks down the mono, flouro, or braid. I had my points too, and we almost ended up outside over it. Whats your take??

I spit on every knot that I have used for at least 20 years and I don't think it has hurt one bit.
I used to work for a guy at a clothing store who fished. This girl was taking pins out of some shirts or something and put a couple pins in her mouth and accidently had one get lodged in her throat. Well this guy said Aww just tell her to swallow it and her stomach acids will dissolve it. I just looked him and said man she's not a fish.

What did he suggest using???
I normally use spit but have stuck my line in the water on occasion (mainly to really get it wet - not to avoid my spit).
Would love to know if someone has figured out a different / better way of preserving the integrity of the line while tying a knot...

Not a doctor or nuclear physicist but I don't think they would call it stomach acid if it was in your mouth. Also there are enzymes, not acid in your saliva that begin to break down your food to aid in swallowing and to better aid in the stomach acid to digest after you swallow. Ramble ramble. Anyway, you can't fix stupid and I say that because ignorance is lack of information. This guy sounds like he had plenty of information unfortunately it is wrong. My two cents.

Stomach acid is really called Gastric Acid. The most aboundant chemical in gastric acid is Hydrochloric acid. You have no hydrochloric acid (stomach acid) in your mouth or you would continuously have ulcers from the acid burning the tissues of your tongue and the inside of your mouth. In the stomach lining, a special lubricant is used to keep the acid from burning the sides of the stomach walls. There are week enzymes in your spit that start to break down the starches and sugars that you chew up when eating but nothing strong enough to act like an acid. The guy you talked to doesnt know what he is talking about.
And im not a doctor either but i am an Athletic trainer and had to take Anatomy and Physiology which this type of info is found in.

An oil would be an even better lubricant but that would be messy and spit is always available. If you have acid in your silivia then you need to go to the doctor because you have acid reflux. The wonder of our bodies is your stomach acid stays where its suppose to..in your stomach in a mucus covered container that can handle the acid.(TMI?) Your friend is right(we are like bass) about that acid being able to dissolve a pin but I would be afraid of where the pin would end up before it dissolves. Yep, you cant stop stupid.

Man! Thats gotta SUCK if you got acid all the way in your mouth! Thats a super bad case of indigestion! I can tie a knot using spit, fish with it all day, then put it away for a month and its still just as strong when I use it again. If that were the case, all our knots would be eatin away when we go to use em again.

"RED NECK LOGIC" I have yet to have a styrofoam cup create a hole in it from my spit. I would think the line we use is alot tougher than a styrofoam cup.

Real men use spit. However mothers spit will remove dirt ect. from a childs face i have seen it happen myself. Having said that do let any mother spit on your line.

Even if your spit had a little acid in it, it would get rinsed off immediately when you make your first cast right??? Not that it does. Spit absolutely does not have any acid in it. That's why heartburn and acid reflux hurts so much. Your mouth and esophagus aren't made to contain that acid for any length of time.

Its a waste of time to argue with a stupid person. Just leave him with his delusions.
I am surprised that someone hasn't said to pee on it if you are worried about the spit damaging the line.

The guy was prolly an Algore lovin, tree huggin, liberal yankee democrat, cause he sure wasn't a good ole boy. Personally, I think the fish was attracted to my spit back when I dipped, cause I feel like I used to catch more fish when I dipped than I do now since April 4 2008 (the day of infamy, the day I last dipped).

There ought to be a law for people like that. The law is that they have Non-Breeder tattoed on their forehead.
