I am moving to Texas in early November, being stationed at Fort Hood. I have 2 boys 7& 8 who love to fish. Can any one tell me where to go around Fort Hood, to catfish. I just bought a old jon boat but I need to do some work to it so bank fishing areas would be real helpful. Thanks everyone.

I wish I could remember his name , Eddie___ and some numbers, I believe he was stationed at FT. Hood and got transfered to Hawaii a while back. He's a big cat fisherman and could tell you some good places to look.

Hey Sarge, welcome aboard and to Texas! For the closest would be Lake Belton. They have blues there but not in Stillhouse. Never been stocked there but there is a healthly population of channels and yellows there. On Belton, for bank fishing can't beat the Cowhouse creek and the river. Cowhouse is on Fort Hood land and is easily accessable to troops. Just after a good rain in Killeen and on the base the catfish will stack up in cowhouse.

Thank you, for the info. I will give it a try when I get there at the end of the month. I know my kids will have a blast. What is the best bait to use for blues. Do you know where the best bait and tackle shop is around there.

Best bait for blue's is fresh shad, gizzard to be exact. I have had some luck on blue gill also. Use them fresh as cut bait. As in tackle shops, not really any good ones around here for catfish. Try Academy in Killeen, they are just off 190 they have the best selction around here for everything. As for finding shad on lake belton from shore? Would throw around the docks in early morning or evening. Try the back of coves and the swim area at BLORA (belton lake outdoor recreational area) on Ft. Hood.

Sarge, this is some older information from when I used to live down there with my father in the late 80's early 90's but I would bet it is still good. Go to the Rod & Bottle and get your fishing permit for Ft. Hood and state fishing license, web site for more info http://www.hoodmwr.com/sportsmenscenter.htm.There are stock ponds all over the post that they stock with fish, as long as you have legal license, fishing permit and are signed in to the area you can fish these ponds. I am pretty sure you will have to have the permit to fish the Cowhouse too. My father and I used to fish some ponds on south Ft. Hood this time of year and slay the 2-4lb channels that were stocked there. We used worms and dip baits and had some non stop action. Most of them have gravel and dirt tracks to them that get you pretty close to the water and other than the occasional snake there is not much to worry about. Yes, even this late in the year there is the chance that you will see snakes I almost stepped on one quail hunting there way back when. Good luck and welcome to Texas!

SSG,Welcome to the TFF, like Spud said your closest option is the cowhouse creek on Belton lake,it's easily accessible to the troops, and they have bank fishing access.Belton is a tough lake for cats,I have been fishing it since I was a little kid,but I would recommend it over Stillhouse. You can also try Leona Park, and Mcregor Park on Belton,I used to do pretty good here when I was younger. When you get your jon boat fixed up Bull Creek,Owl Creek, and up in the Leon River,on Belton are good places to fish as well.

He's another soldier stationed in HI. now. Best of luck to you. I believe he also does video's and posts them on youtube. You might try that as well.

Cowhouse and the river upstream. Yellows always pickup in spring time. Just to let you know also, if you have never caught a hybrid, Belton is full of them and they put up one hell of a fight! She is one of the premier hybrid lakes in texas.

PM sent to ya with some details. Spud and Jared are right on though. I sent you some info with some good bank spots. Shad and stink bait are the way to go around Belton lake. Cowhouse is great at times, and a good place to do some camping. I sent you some instructions on how to get to the best camp spot on cowhouse. Catfishing is tough around that area, but they are there. Hope the PM helps, If you need more info just let me know! Also there are tons of guides on this forum all around texas, winter is the best time for the blues, so you might want to get with one of them and take a trip. Since you mentioned the john boat I will def recommend the Brazos, which is just about a half hour - 45min east of you. IF I can remember right, I think its Highway 7 northeast of temple that crosses the brazos and has a boat ramp. Some GREAT flattheads in that river!

Fort Hood is open, has been since last night. Heightened alert and security but is open. Operations as usual in Killeen and on post. I have workers on post.
