With water temperatures dropping every day a variety of patterns are developing on Amistad and most of them will center around the grass. The outside edge of hydrilla is currently ranging from 24’- 29’ and that depth is a good starting point when looking for fall bass on Amistad. Most of the better grass can be found in the back 2/3 of all the major creeks. Look for where visible grass coming to an edge or areas where the grass is draped over trees and has lots of irregularities, one of the best baits for locating and catching bass suspended around the grass is a suspending jerk bait. I will usually start with a shad pattern mega bass 110 or lucky craft pointer, fish the bait with hard snaps and long pauses, but vary the retrieve and the color until you find what the fish prefer.
Another strong fall pattern will be fishing creek channel bends and points in 30’-45’. I will concentrate on these fish on calm days or the bluebird days immediately after a cold front. A big Texas rigged worm or a small fluke or finesse worm attached to a drop shot will work well. The best colors have been either green pumpkin purple or green pumpkin red. I will look for the sharpest breaks on the ridge and begin graphing there; the fish should be in large schools so they will be easy to locate on your electronics. There will be a lot of small fish mixed in with the larger fish and a good way to target the bigger fish is with a big bait. If that doesn’t work go in with the drop shot. 8-10lb. fluorocarbon line and a rod with a lot of tip are a big plus when drop shotting. I prefer a Power Tackle SPN-43 7’ spinning rod.
There will also be a lot of fish schooling in open water this time of year. Keep an eye out for sea gulls diving, this will be a sure give away that bass are chasing bait to the surface. Any small shad or chartreuse colored jerk baits, swim-baits, or traps will work. These schools will likely be a mixture of stripers and largemouth so keep your drag set light.
Good Fishing,
